Calistoga, CA

Can we get gutter guards put on a Calistoga house?

Yes, from our Santa Rosa office about 18 road miles away, and Calistoga is on both of our Google profiles’ service areas. We carry 27 types of gutter covers because no single cover suits every house. Dave picks one by what falls on the roof, oak leaves or conifer needles, and by how steep the roof is.

Calistoga is a small city, about 5,100 people in 2.6 square miles. The Census Bureau’s latest five-year estimates count about 2,170 homes with a median build year of 1980; roughly half went up before 1980, and mobile homes make up more than one in five. The Tubbs Fire started on October 8, 2017, off Highway 128 and Bennett Lane northwest of downtown, and the Glass Fire brought an evacuation order for the whole city in late September 2020. Under oaks, gutter guards keep the dry leaves that embers can ignite from piling up along the roof edge.

About Calistoga

Is my Calistoga home in a high fire hazard zone?

Parts of town are. CAL FIRE’s 2025 maps put some Calistoga neighborhoods in the Very High zone, and the City Council has adopted those maps, so a parcel’s rating now sets its clearance and building rules. Very High parcels carry 100-foot clearance duties. Look up your own address on the State Fire Marshal’s hazard zone page.

The City’s defensible space page spells out what each zone brings. In the Very High zone, owners clear and maintain vegetation for 100 feet around a building or to the property line, and new construction and renovations follow the Chapter 7A wildfire building standards. High zones apply Chapter 7A to new construction from January 1, 2026, and even a Moderate rating has to be disclosed when a house sells. Two older code sections, 8.24.020 and 12.12.010, already require owners to keep tall grass, brush and weeds cut back.

Fire season is half the year; the other half is wet. NOAA’s normals for the Calistoga station, on the northwest side of town, average 38.58 inches a year, and 85% of it falls from November through March. February 1986 brought 32.06 inches in one month, with 8.10 inches on February 17 alone, and the October 2021 atmospheric river left 8.70 inches over two morning readings.

Oaks were plentiful here when this was the Wappo village site of Nilektsonoma, Chicken Hawk Place. Just south of town, Bothe-Napa Valley State Park holds coast redwoods, Douglas-fir, tanoak and madrone (California State Parks). The City’s tree rules protect many larger trees and native oaks, so ask before cutting back one that hangs over the roof.

Local rules

What Calistoga rules touch a roof or gutter?

Fire rules lead. Parcels in the Very High zone need 100 feet of maintained clearance, and renovations there follow Chapter 7A. On a building listed or eligible for a historic inventory, the zoning code sends any alteration to the Planning Commission for design review. Taking out a protected tree requires a City permit and a mitigation deposit.

Before roof or gutter work in Calistoga

  1. Find your parcel’s hazard rating in the State Fire Marshal map viewer. Calistoga’s Council adopted the 2025 local maps, so the rating sets your clearance and building rules.
  2. For a building in the downtown Commercial-Design overlay or on a historic inventory, ask Planning and Building at City Hall, 1232 Washington Street, whether the exterior change needs design review.
  3. Building permits go through the Planning and Building Department at Calistoga City Hall; ask there before any exterior work on a listed building.
  4. Before removing an oak that drops onto the roof, apply for a tree permit, since removals can carry replacement or mitigation conditions.
  5. Keep tall grass, brush and weeds cut through fire season, as Municipal Code 8.24.020 and 12.12.010 require, and keep leaves and needles off the roof and out of the gutters.

Services in Calistoga

Which of our services fit a Calistoga home?

Gutter guards first, matched to whether oak leaves or conifer needles land on the roof. Before each fire season, gutter cleaning and roof cleaning clear the roof itself. Older homes may need gutter repairs before a guard goes on, and long hot summers make solar panel cleaning worth a look.

FAQ

Calistoga Questions

Yes. Calistoga is listed on both of our Google Business Profiles, the Santa Rosa one and the Windsor one. From our Santa Rosa office it is about 18 road miles to City Hall on Washington Street, and about 20 from the Windsor office on Bell Road, by way of the roads that cross the hills between Sonoma County and the valley.

Off Highway 128 and Bennett Lane in Calistoga, on October 8, 2017, according to CAL FIRE’s incident record. It burned 36,807 acres across Napa and Sonoma counties, and almost the entire town was evacuated. The 1964 Hanly Fire had taken the same path. Three years later, the Glass Fire led to an order covering the whole city.

No cover makes a house fireproof. What a guard does is keep leaves and needles, the fuel embers find, from piling up in the gutter. One reviewer wrote: “I’m relieved to finally have high-quality gutter covers that will protect my home from embers during wildfires.” Clean the roof too, since debris collects above the gutter.

Plenty. The National Trust for Historic Preservation named Calistoga a Distinctive Destination in 2001, and Lincoln Avenue has buildings such as the 1887 Seiberlich Building, found eligible for the California Register. Alterations to any building listed or eligible for a historic inventory go to the Planning Commission, so ask the City before changing exterior features.
