What does a full gutter replacement include?
Everything from the old system coming down to the last downspout going up. The worn gutters are removed, the fascia they hang on gets checked, and the new runs and outlets are laid out. Then each downspout is placed so its water lands away from walls, walkways and the foundation. Painting is available when the house calls for it.

When is it time to replace gutters instead of patching them?
When the patches stop holding. Gutters that leak at joint after joint, pull away from the fascia in several places, or have rusted through along the bottom tend to cost more to keep fixing than to replace. Dave will tell you at the estimate which way he’d go, and the written proposal lays it out so the decision stays yours.

The rules
Do new gutters have to meet California's wildfire building rules?
On new construction in a wildland-urban interface area, yes. Section 504.4 of the 2025 California Wildland-Urban Interface Code says gutters and downspouts must be made of noncombustible material, and gutters need an approved way to keep leaves and debris from collecting. Your building department can tell you whether your lot sits in one of those areas.

That section lives in Title 24, Part 7, the 2025 California Wildland-Urban Interface Code, in the chapter on ignition-resistant construction. Replacing gutters on an existing house is a different situation from building new, so if you’re adding on or rebuilding, ask the building department what applies before the work is scheduled. Gutter Installation Questions from Sonoma County Homeowners
Can new gutters be painted on an older home?
Yes, painted gutters are one of the options. On an older house the finish often matters as much as the metal, because a bright new gutter can stand out against weathered trim. Talk through the look you want at the estimate, along with any trim details worth keeping, and the written proposal will say exactly what gets painted.
Where should downspouts go on a hillside lot?
Downhill of the house, and away from anything that can wash out. On sloped Sonoma County lots, a downspout that empties onto a bare bank or a path can carve the soil away over a rainy season. Dave looks at the grade during the walk-around and places outlets so the water lands where the ground can take it.
Do you install gutters on two-story houses and commercial buildings?
Yes. Two-story homes are routine, and the company also works for wineries, schools, municipalities, apartment owners and HOAs. Bigger buildings follow the same order as a house: a site visit, a written proposal listing every building and run, then the install. Should gutter guards go on at the same time as new gutters?
It’s usually the simplest moment to do it. The gutters are new and clean, and the crew is already working along the roof edge. If redwoods, oaks or pines hang over your roof, ask about covers at the estimate so they can be written into the same proposal as the new gutters.
Does Dave need to see the house before quoting a replacement?
Yes. A replacement depends on the length of each run, the corners, the roof edge and where the water has to go, so he comes out first. In his words, “we’re there to gather information from the client, not try to sell them something.” The written proposal follows the visit.
Is copper worth the extra cost?
On a historic house, or one where the gutters are part of the look, owners often decide it is. Copper costs more than aluminum up front and weathers from bright metal to brown, then green. On most Sonoma County homes, aluminum in a color matched to the trim does the same job for less.
