Gutter Installation in Healdsburg, Built for 42 Inches of Rain

Healdsburg’s NOAA station averages 42.81 inches of rain a year, roughly 36% more than the Santa Rosa station. We measure, lay out and put up new gutters and downspouts from our Windsor office, about 7 road miles south on US 101.

Gutter installation · Healdsburg

Can someone measure my Healdsburg house for new gutters?

Yes. Dave Stankas comes up from our Windsor office on Bell Road, about 7 road miles from Healdsburg City Hall, to measure the eaves, check the fascia and see how the lot slopes. A written proposal follows with the gutter runs, downspout locations, paint and any covers, so you can compare options before deciding.

In NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals, the Healdsburg co-op station averages 15 days a year with an inch of rain or more, and those heavy days decide whether a gutter system works. A run with too few outlets overflows at its low corner, and a downspout aimed at the foundation keeps the soil there soaked all winter. Healdsburg’s housing adds age to the mix: the Census Bureau’s estimates put about a quarter of its homes before 1960 and nearly half before 1980. Our gutter installation plans the runs and outlets around both. Our Healdsburg town page covers the rest of what we do here.

Where does roof water end up once it leaves a Healdsburg downspout?

Often in Foss Creek. The city’s storm water FAQ says most drainage in Healdsburg leads to Foss Creek, which flows into Dry Creek and the Russian River, and anything entering a storm drain gets there untreated. Outlets aimed at lawn, planting beds or a splash block let roof water soak in close to where it fell.

That’s why the layout starts on the ground. At the walk-around we note where the yard dips, where paths and patios sit, and which corners already show splash marks or worn soil, then place the downspouts to suit (City of Healdsburg storm water FAQ). With so much of the town draining to one small creek, water that soaks into a planting bed is water that doesn’t race down the gutter on the street.

Houses in the Johnson Street and Matheson historic districts add a step: the city sends most exterior changes there through Planning Department design review before work begins, and a separate building permit can apply (Historic District overlays). New gutters on a house there should look like they belong, which usually means a profile and paint color that suit the trim. Painted gutters are part of our work, and the written proposal spells out the color so planning staff can see it.

FAQ

Healdsburg gutter installation FAQ

Enough that no stretch of gutter carries too much roof. The count depends on the roof area draining to each run, the run length and the corners. In a town that averages 15 days a year with an inch of rain or more, long runs often earn an extra outlet, and each one is placed where the ground can take the water.

Yes. Painted gutters are part of what we do, and on an older house a color matched to the trim keeps the new metal from standing out. In the two historic districts, check with Planning at 401 Grove Street, (707) 431-3348, before work starts, since exterior changes there generally need design review.

If redwoods, oaks or bay trees overhang the roof, the install is the simplest time, with clean gutters and the crew already working along the eaves. Dave picks the cover by the debris your trees drop and the pitch of the roof, out of 27 types. See gutter guards in Healdsburg for how that works.

We haven’t found a city page that says either way for gutters alone, so ask before a full replacement. The historic overlay page notes that a building permit may be required depending on scope, separate from design review. Outside the districts, a quick call to City Hall settles it before any material is ordered.
