Who fits gutter guards on San Anselmo homes?

We do. Nor-Cal Maintenance serves San Anselmo and the rest of the Ross Valley from our Santa Rosa office, about 43 road miles north of Town Hall. We clean the gutters first, repair what needs it, then fit a guard chosen for your debris and the pitch of your roof. Dave Stankas says those two things decide the cover.

San Anselmo’s homes are old. By the Census Bureau’s latest estimates, the median house in town was built in 1955, about 86% went up before 1980, and close to three in ten date from 1939 or earlier. Many sit in the low Flatlands along San Anselmo Creek, often on raised foundations, while others climb the hillsides; trails in the town’s Sorich Ranch Park pass through eucalyptus woods and oak groves. Old gutters under that much leaf fall clog quickly, and a gutter guard fitted to the debris keeps them draining.

About San Anselmo

Why do gutters work so hard in San Anselmo?

Because the Ross Valley is wet. Kentfield, about a mile and a half from Town Hall, averages 44.39 inches a year under NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals, including 9.78 inches in December. A clogged gutter spills that water next to the house, in a town where San Anselmo Creek has flooded the center of town five times since 1925.

The December 2005 storms are why the county’s flood program exists. The Marin County Flood Control District says its Ross Valley Flood Protection and Watershed Program began after that month’s flooding caused nearly 95 million dollars in damage in Fairfax, San Anselmo, Ross, Kentfield and Larkspur. Its Flood Zone 9, formed in 1965, covers most of the 28-square-mile Ross Valley watershed and charges a storm drainage fee.

Wildfire rules come from the Ross Valley Fire Department. San Anselmo, Fairfax and Ross have adopted the 2025 California Fire Code and the 2025 California Wildland Urban Interface Code with local amendments, and the department’s defensible space guidance says to clean needles and leaves from the roof and rain gutters regularly during fire season and to keep trees at least 10 feet from the chimney and roof.

San Anselmo also belongs to the Marin Wildfire Prevention Authority, approved by Marin voters on March 3, 2020. MWPA funds defensible space and home hardening evaluations, and its home hardening grant page names gutter guards among improvements that have not needed a matching investment. Check the current terms before you plan around one.

Local rules

What San Anselmo rules touch roofs and gutters?

Fire guidance and, on some lots, design review. Ross Valley Fire asks owners to keep roofs and gutters clear of needles and leaves through fire season. On hillside lots zoned R-1-H, design review covers all exterior changes, paint and finish included, so check with town planning before changing gutter color or style there.

Before you add gutter guards in San Anselmo

  1. See whether your parcel is in the wildland urban interface on the Ross Valley Fire map page, or call the Prevention Bureau at (415) 258-4686, ext. 5.
  2. Ask for an MWPA defensible space and home hardening evaluation; MWPA’s grants require one first.
  3. On an R-1-H hillside lot, talk to town planning before changing the color or profile of your gutters. Permit staff are at (415) 258-4616.
  4. Have the gutters cleaned and any leaks repaired before guards go on, so you aren’t sealing debris inside.
  5. In the Flatlands, aim downspouts away from the foundation and toward ground that can take the water.

Services in San Anselmo

What else can we do for a San Anselmo house?

Gutter guards head the list, because oak and eucalyptus litter plus heavy winter rain clog open gutters fast. We also do gutter cleaning and repairs on older systems, roof moss removal on shaded roofs, and small dry rot repairs found along the fascia during the work.

FAQ

San Anselmo Questions

It depends on the debris and the roof. Dave Stankas says the type of debris is the most important variable and roof pitch comes second, because water can shoot past the wrong cover on a steep roof. We carry 27 types of gutter covers, Gutterglove among them, and choose one after looking at your trees and roofline.

A guard keeps leaves from piling up in the gutter, where Fire Safe Marin says wind-blown embers often collect. One of our Google reviewers, Misti W., wrote that she was relieved to have gutter covers “that will protect my home from embers during wildfires.” No cover replaces clearing the roof itself, which Ross Valley Fire asks owners to do every fire season.

Possibly. San Anselmo is a member of the Marin Wildfire Prevention Authority, and MWPA’s home hardening grant page names gutter guards among improvements that haven’t needed a matching investment. A no-cost MWPA evaluation of your property comes first. Funding changes from year to year, so check the grant page or call MWPA before counting on it.

San Anselmo Creek has flooded the center of town in 1925, 1940, 1963, January 1982 and December 2005, Wikipedia notes, with the 1982 storm the worst after more than 8 inches of rain in 12 hours. Gutters can’t stop a creek, but working gutters and well-placed downspouts keep roof water from pooling against your own foundation.
