How often should San Anselmo gutters be cleaned?

Twice a year suits many houses here. A fall visit clears summer’s leaves before NOAA’s normals for nearby Kentfield climb from 1.98 inches in October to 4.63 in November and 9.78 in December. A second visit in late spring gets the roof edge ready for fire season, when Ross Valley Fire wants gutters kept clear.

The Ross Valley gets a lot of water in a short season. The Kentfield station, about a mile and a half from Town Hall, averages 27.27 inches from December through February, more than 60% of its yearly total, while July normally brings none at all. Leaves and twigs pile up all summer with nothing to move them, and then the gutters have to carry winter storms. Our gutter cleaning empties each run by hand, sends water through every downspout and checks where the outlets let out, so the first big rain has somewhere to go. More on the town is on our San Anselmo page.

Who keeps the drains clear between your roof and the creek?

You and the Town split the job. San Anselmo’s Streets and Parks Division starts cleaning Town-owned catch basins and storm drains in November to get ready for winter. The gutters and downspouts on your house are the private half, and leaves left in them can wash toward those same street inlets in the first heavy rain.

The Town’s flooding and storm page puts the rule in four words: only rain down the drain. It says it’s illegal to send chemicals, sediment, trash or other pollutants into the water system, cites San Anselmo Code 5.8 on runoff pollution for the details, and points residents to the Marin County Stormwater Pollution Prevention Program. So the muck that comes out of a gutter goes in a bag or a yard-waste container, not the street. Nancy T. noted in her review that the crew “cleaned up the area around the house before they left.”

Fire season is the other deadline. Ross Valley Fire’s defensible space guidance describes a 30-foot clean zone around the house, thinned vegetation out to 100 feet, and roofs and rain gutters kept clear of needles and leaves while fire season lasts. Five San Anselmo neighborhoods, Bald Hill, Barber-Winship, Oak Springs Summit-Woodside, San Francisco Boulevard and Upper Sequoia Park, are recognized Firewise USA Sites, according to the Town’s Firewise page, and neighboring Sleepy Hollow is one too.

FAQ

San Anselmo gutter cleaning FAQ

Yes. Two-story walls, sloped yards and long runs over decks are all part of the work. Mention anything unusual about the site when you call, such as a steep bank below the eaves or a narrow side yard. Celeste G. wrote that everyone with Nor-Cal gets the job done with “a minimal amount of interruption in the daily flow of the household.”

Every one of them. Once the gutters are empty, we run water through each downspout and watch where it comes out, since the clog that floods a gutter often sits out of sight in a bend or a buried line. In the Flatlands, where many homes sit on raised foundations, it’s also a good time to confirm the outlets still point away from the house.

Under tall trees it often makes sense, because whatever sits on the roof rides into the gutters with the next rain. Steve F. wrote that on his roof “Moss & staining was rampant especially on the north sides,” and the crew cleaned the roof, gutters, skylights and solar panels on the same job. Ask about roof moss removal when you book.

Yes. Our Peace of Mind Program is a yearly care plan, so the fall cleaning, plus a spring one if your trees call for it, can be planned around your needs instead of booked in a rush once the first storm hits. Ceylan C. wrote, “I’ve been using Nor-Cal for my roof and gutter cleaning for many years now.”
