How do you choose a gutter guard for a San Anselmo house?
By looking up before looking at products. Dave Stankas puts the type of debris first and roof pitch second: eucalyptus and oak litter behave differently on a cover, and a steep roof can throw water past one that isn’t matched to it. With 27 types of gutter covers to choose from, we fit the guard to both.
Greenbelt Alliance describes the trail in Sorich Ranch Park, the Town’s 62-acre open space at the end of San Francisco Boulevard, climbing through eucalyptus woods, grasslands and oak groves. If your lot has those trees, you know what ends up in the gutters. Dave counts eucalyptus and oaks among the debris that is “extraordinarily acidic” and rots out a gutter, so keeping it from sitting wet all winter matters. Close to nine in ten San Anselmo homes predate 1980, and on gutters that have already served for decades a gutter guard takes away one of the things that wears them out.

Does San Anselmo require gutter guards?
No rule we could find requires them on an existing house. Fire Safe Marin says California’s Zone 0 rules, still under Board of Forestry review, would require roofs and rain gutters clear of combustible debris in very high hazard zones, and CAL FIRE’s current map shows only moderate zones in San Anselmo. A guard helps keep gutters that way.
Fire Safe Marin’s Zone 0 page, dated September 14, 2026, defines Zone 0 as the first five feet out from the walls and the roof edge, and notes that most homes inside Marin’s cities and towns aren’t in the zones the state rules cover yet. It also says each city council and fire board decides how Zone 0 applies locally. For San Anselmo that means Ross Valley Fire, whose hazard map page lets you look up your own address.
Fitting the guard is the last step, not the first. We clean the gutters, fix leaking seams or loose hangers, and only then fasten the cover, because a guard over a sagging or dirty gutter just hides the problem. Gutterglove and Amerimax are among the cover brands we fit. On a steep roof we check how water comes off the shingles before choosing a profile. The fixes that often come first are on our San Anselmo gutter repair page.

FAQ
San Anselmo gutter guards FAQ
Which guard holds up under eucalyptus?
Usually a fine mesh or a cover with small openings, so long, narrow leaves can’t slide in and lodge. The right one also depends on roof pitch and how much litter falls, so Dave goes over the options at the estimate and explains how each would handle your trees. Our post on types of gutter guards compares the main styles.
Do guards help in fire season?
They keep dry leaves from collecting in the gutter, which is where Ross Valley Fire wants them gone during fire season. They don’t replace clearing the roof itself, and no cover makes a house fireproof. For a professional look at the whole lot, MWPA offers defensible space and home hardening evaluations to San Anselmo residents.
Will a guard fit gutters that are decades old?
If they’re sound, yes. We check the seams, hangers and slope first and repair anything loose, since a cover can’t fix a gutter that already leaks or sags. If a run is rusted through or badly bent, Dave will tell you a new gutter makes more sense, and the cover can go on with it.
Can you put guards on a two-story house or a long hillside run?
Yes. Height and length change the setup, not the approach: the gutters get cleaned, checked and repaired, and then the cover goes on section by section. Elmer G. wrote that Nor-Cal came and “repaired my rain gutters and installed new rain gutter covers,” explaining each step along the way.
