Clearing Moss and Oak Leaves From Geyserville Roofs

Geyserville’s winters are wet and its summers bring fire season, and a roof here has to come through both. We brush off moss and leaves, clear the gutters below and can treat the shingles so growth is slower to return.

Who cleans moss and leaves off roofs in Geyserville?

Nor-Cal Maintenance does, from our Windsor office on Bell Road, about 15 road miles south of the Geyserville post office. Both of our Google profiles list Geyserville in their service areas. The crew brushes moss and debris off the roof, clears what lands in the gutters and can apply a treatment that slows regrowth on the shingles.

Geyserville is small and old. The 2020 census counted 861 residents and 339 homes in the census-designated place, and the Census Bureau’s five-year survey, which carries wide margins for a place this size, puts roughly a third of the houses at 1939 or earlier. The village grew up in the 1800s as the gateway to The Geysers, the steam vents in the mountains to the east. Older roofs, big shade trees and long wet winters are where roof moss removal and roof cleaning come in.

About Geyserville

Why do Geyserville roofs collect so much?

Oaks and winter rain. About half of the Geyserville census area sits in Sonoma County’s Valley Oak Habitat district, where cutting down a valley oak over six inches across needs a zoning permit, so the big trees stay. The nearest NOAA normals station, in Healdsburg, averages 42.81 inches of rain a year, mostly from December through February.

Fire is the other half of the picture. The Kincade Fire started on the night of October 23, 2019 at John Kincade Road and Burned Mountain Road, northeast of town, and the county’s evacuation order for Geyserville said it had crossed Highway 128 near Moody Lane. The 2017 Pocket Fire began off Pocket Ranch Road, a few miles north. On CAL FIRE’s February 2025 map, the village center, post office and fire station included, falls in a Very High fire hazard severity zone, and Permit Sonoma says the rules for that zone apply across unincorporated land regardless of fire district.

The Northern Sonoma County Fire Protection District, headquartered at 20975 Geyserville Avenue, runs defensible space inspections by request all year and on a schedule from spring through summer, under state law PRC 4291 and the county’s Chapter 13A. The county’s inspection form lists leaves and needles on roofs and in gutters among the hazards to remove, which is the same debris a roof cleaning takes off. The district’s inspection page has a form for requesting a visit.

Local rules

What local rules touch roof and gutter work in Geyserville?

County rules, since Geyserville is unincorporated. Permit Sonoma handles building permits, and its exempt-work list doesn’t include gutters or roofing, so ask before replacing either. Fire rules come from PRC 4291 and Sonoma County Chapter 13A, enforced by the Northern Sonoma County Fire Protection District, and removing a valley oak can need a county permit.

A Geyserville checklist for roof and gutter season

  1. Look up your parcel on CAL FIRE’s 2025 map. Permit Sonoma’s hazard map notice explains how the Very High zone rules reach unincorporated land.
  2. Request a defensible space visit from the Northern Sonoma County Fire Protection District at 20975 Geyserville Avenue, (707) 857-4373.
  3. Read Permit Sonoma’s permit-exempt work list before replacing gutters or a roof. Work that isn’t on it is assumed to need a permit.
  4. Thinking of taking out a valley oak? On a parcel in the Valley Oak Habitat district, one over six inches in diameter needs a county zoning permit.
  5. Keep raked leaves out of roadside ditches. The county says leaves there cut drainage capacity and add to flooding.

FAQ

Geyserville Questions

It slows it down. After the moss is brushed off, we can apply a product to the shingles, and Steve F. wrote on our Windsor Google profile that four years after his roof was treated in June 2022 there was “still no sign of the moss coming back.” Shade and rain still decide how quickly any roof turns green again.

Twice a year suits a lot of houses here. A spring cleaning gets leaves and needles off as the fire district’s scheduled inspections begin and the dry months arrive, and late fall clears what the oaks dropped before the heaviest rain. At the Healdsburg station, December through February averages close to 25 inches.

Yes. Mandatory evacuation orders expanded to the town of Geyserville before dawn on October 24, 2019, the morning after the fire started in The Geysers. By October 27, orders and warnings covered about 190,000 people across Sonoma County. The fire burned 77,758 acres in all.

Yes. Teresa H. wrote that Nor-Cal has been cleaning her “steeply pitched roof for 8 years now.” A roof with several levels or sections takes more planning rather than a different approach, and we work out ladders and access at the estimate, before the written proposal goes out.
