Gutter Cleaning Under the Valley Oaks of Geyserville
Valley oaks shade much of the ground around Geyserville, and county rules keep most of them standing. We clear their leaves out of gutters and downspouts before the winter storms and again ahead of fire season.

What time of year should Geyserville gutters be cleared?
Twice a year suits most houses under oaks here: once in late fall, ahead of the December through February storms, and once in early spring, as the fire district’s scheduled inspections get under way. We clear each gutter by hand, flush the downspouts, haul the debris away and take before and after photos of the work.
About half of the Geyserville census area lies inside Sonoma County’s Valley Oak Habitat district, most of it the valley floor around the village. Valley oaks drop broad leaves every autumn, and on a roof those leaves slide straight into the gutter, where they sit wet once the rain starts. Our gutter cleaning visits in Geyserville are timed around that leaf drop and the storms that follow it, with a second pass before summer for fire season.

Why do Geyserville gutters fill with oak leaves?
Because the oaks are protected. Inside the Valley Oak Habitat district, cutting down a valley oak more than six inches in diameter takes a county zoning permit plus replacement planting or a fee, so mature trees stay over roofs and driveways. Each fall they shed a full season of leaves, and gutters catch their share.
Rain arrives in a few big months. The Healdsburg co-op station, about six miles south and the nearest NOAA normals site, averages 42.81 inches a year, nearly 25 of them from December through February (NOAA normals). In November 2024 the same station logged 17.79 inches over three days. A gutter still packed with October’s leaves overflows quickly in a storm like that, and the water ends up along the foundation.
Then comes fire season. The Northern Sonoma County Fire Protection District schedules defensible space inspections from spring through summer, and the county’s inspection form lists leaves and needles in gutters as a hazard to remove under PRC 4291 and Chapter 13A. Permit Sonoma also asks residents to keep leaves out of street gutters, storm drains and drainage ditches; its stormwater tips say leaves there add to flooding every year.
FAQ
Geyserville gutter cleaning FAQ
Do you take the leaves away or leave them in a pile?
We haul them off. Permit Sonoma says leaves in drains and ditches reduce their capacity and add to flooding, so nothing from your gutters goes into the road or a ditch. Nancy T. wrote that the crew “cleaned up the area around the house before they left and let me know the conditions that they found.”
Do you clean gutters at wineries and commercial buildings too?
Yes. Our Google profiles list wineries, schools, apartments and HOAs among the properties we work on, and Annie D.’s review describes a 101-unit complex where we cleaned the gutters. Larger sites get the same walk-around first, then a written proposal listing each building and roofline.
Is gutter cleaning part of fire-season prep in Geyserville?
It’s on the list. The county’s defensible space inspection form calls for removing leaves, needles and other vegetation on roofs and in gutters, and the local fire district enforces it from spring through summer. Downtown Geyserville is also mapped Very High on CAL FIRE’s 2025 hazard map, so clearing gutters before summer is a sensible habit.
Can the fall and spring cleanings be put on a schedule?
Yes. Our Peace of Mind Program sets up exterior care on a yearly schedule, so both visits happen without you having to remember them. Ceylan C. wrote, “I’ve been using Nor-Cal for my roof and gutter cleaning for many years now.” Ask about the program when we come out.
