Do gutter guards keep up with Healdsburg's trees and rain?
When the cover fits both, yes. Fine needles from redwoods and Douglas fir need a tight mesh, broad oak and bay leaves are easier to shed, and in a town with 42.81 inches of normal rain the cover also has to pass water fast. Dave Stankas carries 27 types so he can match the debris and the rain.
Healdsburg’s Land Use Code protects heritage trees on private lots and in the public right of way, with a protected zone that runs from the trunk out to the drip line and never less than 10 feet. That keeps big trees standing over a lot of roofs, and it means leaves and needles will keep landing in the gutters every year. Gutter guards let the trees stay with far fewer ladder trips in the fall. For more on the town itself, see our Healdsburg page.

Do embers matter in Healdsburg if most of the city is outside a hazard zone?
They can. CAL FIRE’s maps leave most of the city outside any zone, but the 2019 Kincade Fire, which started in The Geysers northeast of Geyserville, destroyed Soda Rock Winery in the Healdsburg area. Dry leaves in a gutter give a wind-blown ember somewhere to land, and a cover keeps most of that fuel off the roof edge.
The heritage tree rules sit in Chapter 20.24, Article II of the city’s Land Use Code, which regulates removal on private property and public rights of way (Healdsburg heritage tree protection). A gutter guard works entirely at the roof edge, so it changes nothing about the tree. It goes on after the gutter has been cleaned out and any leaks or loose sections are fixed.
Water is the other half of the choice. NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals give the Healdsburg station about 54 days a year with a tenth of an inch of rain or more (NOAA normals, Healdsburg), and on a steep roof that water arrives fast. Dave’s second rule, after debris, is pitch: if the roof is too steep, rain can shoot past a cover that isn’t matched to it and miss the gutter entirely.

“They just completed an installation of gutter guards. They also power washed the house and exterior window cleaning.”
FAQ
Healdsburg gutter guards FAQ
Which cover handles redwood and Douglas fir needles?
A fine mesh, as a rule. Needles are thin and stiff enough to slip through coarse screens and expanded metal openings, then pile up inside where you can’t see them. Dave will show you covers built for needle debris at the estimate. Our guide to choosing gutter covers explains the main types in plain terms.
Will I still need gutter cleaning in Healdsburg with guards on?
Less often, but yes. Covers keep out the leaves and needles that clog a system, while pollen, grit and fine bits can still settle on top or slip in over time. A yearly look and rinse keeps them working, and you can book that with a regular Healdsburg gutter cleaning.
Do guards need design review in Healdsburg's historic districts?
Ask Planning first. On the Johnson Street and Matheson blocks, the city routes exterior alterations through design review before work starts, and a cover changes how the roof edge looks, even if only a little. Planning is at 401 Grove Street, (707) 431-3348, and can tell you which level of review applies.
What happens to the gutters during a guard install?
They get cleaned out, checked and fixed first. Leaking seams are resealed and loose sections re-fastened, because a cover on a broken gutter just hides the problem. Then the guards are fastened along the run. Kristin B. wrote that the crew came to clean and fix the gutters and install guards, and took pictures before, during and after.
