Which gutter guard fits a Santa Rosa house?
The one matched to what lands on your roof. Dave Stankas carries 27 types of gutter covers and chooses by debris first, since redwood needles slip through screens that stop oak and bay leaves. Roof pitch comes second, because on a steep roof the water has to turn into the gutter instead of shooting past the cover.
Santa Rosa’s older neighborhoods near downtown often sit on tree-lined streets, and the city’s own description of the Olive Park district mentions quiet, tree-lined residential avenues around a small park. To the east and northeast the city climbs into hills where CAL FIRE’s 2025 Local Responsibility Area maps draw Very High fire hazard zones inside city limits. Both ends of town fill gutters, with different debris and different stakes, which is why gutter guards here are chosen house by house. Estimates run out of our Santa Rosa office on Banyan Street.

What did the Glass Fire show about embers in Santa Rosa?
That embers can run ahead of the flames. In the first days of the Glass Fire, in late September 2020, NBC Bay Area reported that crews couldn’t stop a cloud of embers, which ignited several homes along Mountain Hawk Drive in Skyhawk. Dry leaves packed in a gutter are one of the places a wind-blown ember can land and catch.
The Glass Fire started on September 27, 2020 near Glass Mountain Road in Napa County, burned 67,484 acres and destroyed 334 homes in Sonoma County before it was contained on October 20 (Glass Fire; NBC Bay Area). Skyhawk is still part of the city’s fire work: the Santa Rosa Fire Department’s 2026 weed abatement list shows hand crews clearing pathways along Mountain Hawk Drive and grazing on the Skyhawk open space (SRFD).
Most of the city’s big trees aren’t going anywhere. Santa Rosa’s historic-property guide notes that removing a large tree generally takes a Tree Permit, and the tree code treats oaks, bays, redwoods and Douglas firs as heritage trees once their trunks reach set sizes. A guard lets those trees stay and keeps most of their litter out of the gutter. It doesn’t end upkeep: fine needles and grit can collect on top, so covers get a look and a rinse during yearly visits under our Peace of Mind Program.

“The work crew paid attention to detail when cleaning our gutters, installing the gutter guards, and powerwashing the back of our home.”
FAQ
Santa Rosa gutter guards FAQ
Is there a city grant for gutter guards in Santa Rosa?
Not one taking new applications. The fire department’s WUI Fuel Modification Program has funded vent screening and roof gutter guards for qualifying homes in the Wildland Urban Interface area, but applications closed on August 18, 2023, and Phase 2 work is waiting on state and federal review, estimated for 2026 or early 2027. Questions go to SRFDgrants@srcity.org.
Do redwood needles need a different cover than oak leaves?
Usually. Redwood needles are thin and work their way into coarse screens and wide openings, while oak and bay leaves are broad and tend to sit on top of a cover until wind or rain moves them off. Dave looks at what is in your gutters now, then shows covers suited to that debris. Our post on types of gutter guards walks through the options.
Will gutter guards satisfy Santa Rosa's fire rules?
No cover replaces the rules. The city’s vegetation ordinance deals with defensible space, mulch and hazardous trees on WUI parcels, and state law asks owners in Very High zones to keep roofs clear of leaves. A guard keeps most debris out of the gutter, but leaves can still gather on the roof and on top of the cover, so a pre-season check still matters.
Do I need new gutters before guards go on?
Not if the gutters are sound. Existing runs get cleaned out first, and leaking seams or sagging sections get fixed before the covers are fastened, so see gutter repair in Santa Rosa if yours drip. If the metal is rusted through or pulling off rotten fascia, new gutters with covers added during the install make more sense.
