Choosing Gutter Guards for Sebastopol’s Mixed Leaves and Heavy Rain

Oak and maple leaves, bay leaves and redwood needles, often over the same roof, plus about 13 days a year with an inch of rain or more. The cover has to stop the debris and still take the water.

Gutter guards · Sebastopol

How do you pick a gutter guard for a Sebastopol house?

By looking up before looking down. Dave Stankas starts with the trees over the roof, since debris type is the first thing that decides which cover works, and then checks the roof’s pitch. With 27 cover types to choose from, including Gutterglove and Amerimax products, we fit the guard to the house rather than the other way around.

Sebastopol’s protected tree list mixes needles and broad leaves. Besides oaks, bay, redwood and Douglas fir, the city code protects bigleaf maple, box elder, white alder, Oregon ash, three kinds of willow and California black walnut above certain trunk sizes, and one yard can hold several of them. Each drops something different: maple and walnut leaves are large, alder and willow leaves are small, and redwood needles slip through coarse screens. The gutter guards we suggest follow from what is overhead, and the Sebastopol page explains the tree rules.

Can a gutter guard keep up with a Sebastopol downpour?

It has to, so rain is part of how we choose one. Graton’s NOAA normals show about 13 days a year with an inch of rain or more, and twice that many with at least half an inch. A guard that sheds water past the gutter on days like those defeats its purpose, however well it stops leaves.

Roof pitch decides whether heavy rain goes in or over. Dave’s second rule for covers is that on a steep roof, water can shoot past a guard that doesn’t suit it. We match the cover’s profile to the pitch so water follows the roof edge into the gutter. On low-slope roofs, we also look for a cover that leaves are less likely to settle on.

A guard isn’t a lid you forget about. Leaves can collect on top of the mesh, especially in a heavy oak year, so a yearly look still makes sense, and it fits easily into a fall gutter cleaning visit. The UC ANR Fire Network’s page on gutters makes the same point: covers help, but they may still need periodic attention.

“Today they came to clean and fix the gutters and install gutter guards. I love that they took pictures before, during and after the service.”

FAQ

Sebastopol gutter guards FAQ

Usually, if the gutters fill more than once a year. You can’t take out a protected oak for its leaf litter, so the choice is between frequent cleanings and a cover that keeps most leaves out. Larry F. wrote that Dave installed guards for him and was “prompt, efficient and reasonably priced.” If a cleaning plan makes more sense for your house, we’ll say so.

Yes, and low slopes are often simpler than steep ones, because rain runs off slowly enough to follow the roof edge into the gutter. The bigger question on a low roof is debris resting on top of the cover, since it doesn’t slide off as readily. We pick a profile and mesh that suit both the pitch and what falls on it.

Not much. Most covers sit at or just under the roof edge, so from the sidewalk you mostly see the gutter itself. Some styles tuck under the shingles or tiles and some clip to the gutter’s front lip, and we’ll show you the options that suit your roof. Where looks matter, color and profile are part of the choice.

A look at the trees overhead, the roof’s pitch and material, the condition of the gutters and where the downspouts drain. If the gutters need cleaning or repair first, that goes in the written proposal too, since a guard belongs on a sound, empty gutter. Call (707) 940-7875 or use the form to set it up.
