Gutter Installation for Sebastopol Homes Built in the 1970s and 1980s
Sebastopol built more homes in the 1970s than in any other decade, and gutters hung then have seen about fifty winters. We replace them with new runs and downspouts planned around the house, the trees and where the water should go.

Who replaces gutters on Sebastopol homes?
Nor-Cal Maintenance, working from our Santa Rosa office about 8 road miles away, across the Laguna de Santa Rosa. We take down the old gutters, look over the fascia they hung on and put up new runs and downspouts, including seamless gutters. Each job starts with a visit and a written proposal.
Sebastopol’s busiest decade for home building was the 1970s, when about 800 of the town’s 3,401 housing units went up, and another 566 followed in the 1980s, by the Census Bureau’s latest estimates. Together that is four homes in ten. Gutters hung in those years have been through four or five decades of winters. About a third of the housing is in duplexes, fourplexes and apartment buildings, and we install for apartment owners and HOAs as well as homeowners. Our gutter installation page explains the process, and our Sebastopol page covers the town’s trees and storm drains.

Does Sebastopol require a permit for new gutters?
Check with the city first. Gutters don’t appear on the Sebastopol Building Department’s list of work exempt from permits, and that handout adds that an exemption never authorizes work that breaks the code. Call Building and Safety at (707) 823-8597, or visit City Hall at 7120 Bodega Avenue, before ordering anything.
Rainfall sets the size of the job. Graton’s weather station, just northwest of town, is the nearest one with NOAA normals, and they count about 13 days a year with an inch of rain or more. A system that copes with an ordinary shower can still overflow on those days, so the number of downspouts and the size of the outlets get planned for the heavy days, not the average one.
Where the downspouts send that water matters too. The city’s storm water page names Zimpher Creek and Calder Creek as the two major creek systems carrying surface water through Sebastopol, and most of the drain system empties into the Laguna. We place outlets so roof water lands on ground that can absorb it, or reaches a proper drain, away from foundations, walkways and the neighbors’ yards.

FAQ
Sebastopol gutter installation FAQ
Can new gutters go up on a duplex or small apartment building in Sebastopol?
Yes. Almost a third of Sebastopol’s housing units sit in buildings with two or more homes, and we install and maintain gutters for apartment owners, HOAs and commercial properties as well as single-family houses. Bigger buildings mean longer runs and more downspouts, so we walk the whole property with the owner or manager before writing the proposal.
What happens to the old gutters and the fascia behind them?
The old runs come down first, and then we look at the fascia board they were fastened to. On a house from the 1970s, that board may have soft spots from years of overflow. Small areas of dry rot can be repaired before the new gutter goes up, and anything larger goes into the proposal so nothing comes as a surprise.
Does Sebastopol's tree ordinance affect a gutter installation?
Only if branches are in the way. Under the city code, trimming away more than a third of a protected tree’s crown counts as removing it, so plan any big cuts with the city first. Most installs simply work around the trees, and we can suggest gutter guards for what they drop.
How do I get a quote for new gutters in Sebastopol?
Call (707) 940-7875 or fill in the form. We come out to measure, look at the roof edge and the drainage, answer questions and send a written proposal afterward. Cory D. noted in a review that a verbal summary on site was “immediately followed up in a written estimate by Dave.”
