Gutter installation · Tiburon

What does replacing the gutters on a 1970s Tiburon house involve?

Taking down the old runs, checking the fascia and roof edge they hung from, then fitting new gutters and downspouts with outlets placed for your slope. On a house built around 1970, the town’s median, that board has weathered as long as the gutter has. We follow the estimate visit with a written proposal, so you see every step first.

Tiburon’s housing is middle-aged. The Census Bureau’s 2020-2024 estimates date the median home to 1970 and count 1,067 homes from the 1970s alone, the biggest decade of building in town. If a house still has its first gutters, they have weathered about fifty winters on a peninsula in San Francisco Bay. Our gutter installation work replaces the system from the fascia out, with downspouts placed where your lot can handle the water. More about the town is on our Tiburon page.

Do I need a permit to replace gutters in Tiburon?

Ask the Town before work starts. Tiburon’s permit guide says it requires permits other California cities often don’t, because of the peninsula’s geology, topography and climate and its concern for views, privacy and aesthetics. Gutters aren’t named on that partial list either way, so call the Building Division at (415) 435-7380 first.

The Town’s Do I Need a Permit? guide ties design review to physical exterior alterations that need a building permit, and it lists siding and skylights among the work that needs both. It also warns that work done without a required permit is subject to substantial monetary penalties. Planning staff at (415) 435-7390 can tell you how a gutter replacement on your house is treated before anything is ordered.

If your address falls inside the Tiburon Fire Protection District’s mapped wildland urban interface, which you can check on the district’s WUI and hazard zone page, the state’s WUI construction rules come into play. For buildings they cover, gutters and downspouts have to be noncombustible, with a way to keep leaves from collecting. Our contractor license class is C-61/D24, metal products.

From a customer

“My gutters were a disaster because I don't think they had been ever changed and my house is 45 years old. They are now beautiful.”

Tiburon gutter installation FAQ

Yes, painted gutters are part of our work. Most repainting in Tiburon needs no review, but the Town’s permit guide makes exceptions for homes under Precise Plan color conditions in Planned Development zones and for downtown buildings on the historic inventory. If either applies to you, settle the color with Planning at (415) 435-7390 first.

Not by age alone. A 1970s gutter that has been kept clean and refastened can still do its job, while one with rusted seams and a wavy line along the eaves is ready to go. At the estimate we look at every run, and the proposal explains whether repair or replacement fits better. See gutter repair in Tiburon for the fix-it side.

If oaks or pines shade the roof, covers are worth a look while the new gutters are clean and the ladders are up. The guard has to suit both your trees and the new gutter profile, so we write it into the same proposal. Our Tiburon gutter guard page explains how we choose one.

Yes. If a corner overflows or a long run drains to a single outlet, a new install is the time to add more. Edward wrote that the crew did a great job cleaning his gutters and “putting in some needed downspouts on my house.” On a slope, each new outlet is placed so the water heads downhill, away from the walls.
