Gutter Repair in Calistoga After the Winter Storms

Seams that open up, runs that sag off the fascia, downspouts that empty against the house: a Calistoga winter finds all three. We repair what’s there, re-fasten what’s loose and move outlets to where the water should go.

Gutter repair · Calistoga

Can a leaking Calistoga gutter be repaired instead of replaced?

Usually, when the trouble is in a few places. Open seams and corners can be resealed, loose runs re-fastened to solid wood and crushed downspouts replaced. If a gutter leaks along its whole length or has rotted through, Dave will tell you a replacement makes more sense, and the written proposal lays out both options.

A Calistoga gutter gets worked hard at both ends of the year. The city regularly sees summer days of 90 degrees or more and, on average, about 36 winter days at freezing, by its Wikipedia climate summary. Then the rain comes in bulk: in January 2017 the NOAA station on the northwest side of town recorded 15.69 inches, about twice the January normal, with 4.32 inches on January 8. Sealant and fasteners that have aged through those swings tend to give out in a month like that. Our gutter repair visits start by finding out where.

Where should a Calistoga downspout send the water?

Onto ground that can soak it up, away from the foundation, walkways and the neighbor’s lot. Calistoga belongs to the Napa Countywide Stormwater Pollution Prevention Program, which works to cut pollution in the Napa River watershed, so old sealant, metal scraps and gutter muck from a repair go in the trash, never down the street.

Overflow during a storm is the clue to what’s wrong. From February 12 to 28, 2019, the Calistoga station logged 7.95 inches, 2.00 of them on February 13, and its wettest year on record, 1983, brought 75.38 inches, close to twice the 38.58-inch normal in NOAA 1991-2020 normals. Water pouring over the front lip in weather like that usually means a clogged outlet, a run that sags and holds water, or a seam that has opened. Each has its own fix, and the crew checks the joints on either side while they’re up there.

Age is the other half of it. Census estimates put half of Calistoga’s homes before 1980, and on a house that old the problem is sometimes behind the gutter: fascia softened by years of drips won’t hold a fastener, so a re-hung run sags again. Small fascia fixes fall under our dry rot repair. When a run is past saving, the proposal says so; our Calistoga gutter installation page covers the replacement side, and the Calistoga page covers local rules.

FAQ

Calistoga gutter repair FAQ

Usually the gutter has pulled away from the fascia, so water running off the roof edge slips into the gap. Re-fastening the run tight to solid wood fixes most cases. If the drip has stained the siding or softened the trim, point it out at the visit so we can see how far the damage goes.

Yes. A new outlet is cut where you want the water to fall, the old one is closed off and the downspout is run from the new spot; the gutter itself usually stays. Larry R. had “a couple of downspouts relocated for better drainage.” Tell us where the water goes now and where you’d like it to go.

Yes, that’s the right order. A cover fastened over an open seam or a sagging run hides the problem without fixing it. Elmer G. had his rain gutters repaired and new covers installed on one job, which is how we’d normally plan it. Our Calistoga gutter guards page covers the cover side.

Every run. A drip you can see from the patio is often one of several, and a leaking corner may share its cause with a sag nearby. The crew walks the whole system and reports what they find before the repair is written up. Wanda D. wrote that Marcilino “examined all gutters for leaks and repaired them.”
