Roof Cleaning in Cloverdale Before Fire Season
About a third of Cloverdale sits in a Very High fire hazard zone on CAL FIRE’s 2025 map, mostly the hillside streets on the west and north sides. We clear leaves and needles off roofs and out of gutters before the dry months, and again after the fall leaf drop.

Is there a roof cleaning company that serves Cloverdale?
Yes. Nor-Cal Maintenance covers Cloverdale from its Windsor office at 7734 Bell Road, about 24 road miles south of City Hall, and the city is on our Windsor Google profile’s service area. We sweep leaves, needles and moss off the roof, clear the gutters underneath and take before and after photos.
Cloverdale is the northernmost city in the Bay Area, a railroad town incorporated in 1872 and bypassed by US 101 in 1994. Its homes span the decades. Census estimates date about half of them to before 1980 and a fifth to the 1950s alone, while another fifth went up in the 2000s, after Clover Springs opened at the south end in 1997. Summers run hot and dry and can top 100 degrees, which is why roof cleaning here is as much about fire season as about moss.
Housing: U.S. Census ACS 5-year estimates. Rainfall: NOAA 1991–2020 normals for the nearest station. Distance is approximate road miles.
About Cloverdale
How much of Cloverdale is in a fire hazard zone?
More than half of it. On the State Fire Marshal’s February 24, 2025 map, about 35 percent of the city is Very High, 15 percent High and 10 percent Moderate, by our check of the county’s copy. The Very High areas cover the hillside neighborhoods on the west and north sides, and the flat land near US 101 is unzoned.
Cloverdale wrote those zones into its building rules. Ordinance 765-2025, passed December 10, 2025, adopted the 2025 California Wildland-Urban Interface Code, and the city defines its wildland-urban interface fire area as any Moderate, High or Very High zone. The zones show street by street on the Cloverdale hazard zone map the fire district posts.
Each spring the Cloverdale Fire Protection District runs the city’s weed abatement program. Its 2026 schedule had the board declaring hazardous weeds a nuisance on April 13, inspections starting in May and reinspections no later than June 11. The district’s weed abatement page asks owners to keep weeds mowed through fire season and to hold 100 feet of defensible space around the home when possible.
Local rules
Which Cloverdale rules apply to roofs and gutters?
Three sets. The Building Department’s handout says any alteration to a structure needs a permit first, so ask about gutter or roof replacement. The 2025 wildland-urban interface code applies in every mapped zone. And the fire district’s yearly weed abatement covers dead vegetation, low branches and clearance around buildings.
Before fire season on a Cloverdale roof
- Planning new gutters or a new roof? Call the Building Department at 124 N. Cloverdale Boulevard, (707) 894-1701, or apply through the city’s Building Division page.
- Watch the mail in May. The fire district sends weed abatement letters then, and its 2026 brochure lists the minimum standards.
- Trim low tree limbs 3 to 4 feet off the ground, as the brochure recommends, and clear out dead or dried plants.
- Removing a large oak, bay, fir or pine? Cloverdale’s tree chapter may require a removal permit, and the city arborist takes questions.
- Bag roof debris instead of sweeping it to the curb. The city says leaf debris in its storm drains flows to the Russian River.
Services in Cloverdale
What do Cloverdale homes usually need from us?
Roof and gutter clearing before summer, since so much of the city is mapped for fire. Under protected oaks and firs, gutter guards in Cloverdale cut down the cleanup. Houses from the 1950s often need gutter repair, and Cloverdale gutter cleaning before December covers the rest.
FAQ
Cloverdale Questions
Does Cloverdale's weed abatement program cover roofs?
The 2026 brochure’s minimum standards are about vegetation: dead or dried plants, low tree limbs and continuous brush, plus 100 feet of clearance on parcels over an acre. Roofs aren’t named. CAL FIRE’s defensible space advice does include clearing dead leaves and needles from roofs and gutters, so it makes sense to do both at once.
What is Cloverdale's normal rainfall?
The NOAA station in Cloverdale, about a mile from City Hall, averages 41.73 inches a year. Nearly 25 inches of that falls in December, January and February, and June through September together average under half an inch. In November 2024 the station logged 14.20 inches over four days.
Did the 2017 Pocket Fire reach Cloverdale?
Cloverdale Police reported on October 13, 2017 that the city’s fire threat from the Pocket Fire remained low. Areas outside town, including Palomino Lakes, River Road South, Asti Ridge Road and Highland Ranch Road, were still under advisory evacuations then. The fire started off Pocket Ranch Road near Geyserville and burned 17,357 acres.
Can you clean the roof of a two-story hillside house?
Yes. Lisa D. wrote that we cleaned gutters for her that were “very high” and that the workers “take safety seriously.” Second stories and sloped lots are routine, and we look at access, pitch and the trees overhead at the estimate before the written proposal goes out.
