Gutter Guards in San Rafael, When the Trees Stay

San Rafael’s Zone Zero grant lets mature trees stay near the house if they’re limbed back from the roof. Their leaves keep falling. We fit gutter guards matched to oak and bay litter and serve the city from our Santa Rosa office.

Gutter guards · San Rafael

What kind of gutter guard suits a San Rafael house?

One matched to what falls on the roof. Marin County’s open space preserves include oak-bay woodland, and broad leaves call for a different cover than pine or redwood needles. Dave chooses from the 27 types of gutter covers we carry, Gutterglove and Amerimax among them, after seeing your trees, the gutters and the pitch of the roof.

Embers don’t stop at a map line. In the City’s words, embers can travel far and ignite homes anywhere in San Rafael, which is why its fire-safe building rules now cover every address and its Zone 0 guidance asks for leaves and needles to be cleared from roofs and gutters. A guard keeps that litter from collecting along the roof edge between cleanings. It isn’t a fire barrier and still needs a yearly look, but it changes what sits in the gutter through fire season. The cover types are on our gutter guards page.

Where do gutter covers sit in San Rafael's reimbursement program?

Fourth on the Phase 1 list. The City expects Phase 1 items generally done in order: removing juniper, Italian cypress, acacia, broom and bamboo; clearing combustible vegetation within 30 feet; replacing vents with openings over 1/8 inch; then installing gutter covers where trees overhang within 30 feet. Phase 2 opens once Phase 1 is complete.

The paperwork rewards planning. The City’s reimbursement page says it costs nothing to apply, a full wildfire safety evaluation comes first, and only hazards named in that report qualify. Pre-approval holds the funds for 90 days. The City asks you to hire a licensed San Rafael business registered with the City, pay the contractor directly, and keep itemized invoices, proof of payment and photos of the finished work. Ask any contractor, us included, about City registration before you sign; our written proposal names the cover and the gutters it goes on.

The program treats trees with care. Its Zone Zero Complete grant pays toward clearing all vegetation within five feet of a structure, yet mature trees don’t have to come down; they need to be limbed and trimmed away from the roof. The canopy stays, and so does the leaf drop. Beyond the City’s own program, residents are pointed to the Marin Wildfire Prevention Authority, which offers similar grants across the county. Our San Rafael page covers the rest of the City’s wildfire rules. San Rafael Fire also keeps a public list of contractors for home hardening, and NorCal Maintenance Inc is on it under gutter cover contractors; the department notes that it doesn’t endorse or recommend anyone on the list (San Rafael Fire contractor list).

“Today they came to clean and fix the gutters and install gutter guards. I love that they took pictures before, during and after the service.”

FAQ

San Rafael gutter guards FAQ

Probably not yet. Fire Safe Marin says the state’s Zone 0 rules, still under review by the Board of Forestry, cover Very High zones, and most homes inside Marin’s cities and towns aren’t in that category. San Rafael’s own guidance already asks owners to clear leaves and needles from roofs and gutters in the first five feet.

Yes, if the gutters are sound. With about seven in ten San Rafael homes built before 1980, many gutters here have some age, so every run is cleaned and checked first, and leaks or sagging get fixed before a cover goes on. When a gutter is past repair, the proposal says so and prices a new one alongside.

Ask at the estimate. Reviewers mention our photos: Tami R. wrote that “this company even sent me pictures of what they look like and some of the work that they were doing.” The City’s application asks for photos of completed work along with itemized invoices and proof of payment.

The program ties gutter covers to overhead vegetation within 30 feet, and only hazards named in your evaluation report qualify. If no trees overhang the roof, covers may not be on your list at all, and a yearly cleaning may be all the house needs. The evaluation, which costs nothing, settles it.
