How many times a year do Guerneville gutters need clearing?
At least once a year in the fall, and twice under heavy redwood cover. Needles drop through the year, and the old Guerneville weather station recorded about 48 inches of rain a year, most of it from November through March. We clean by hand, flush every downspout and tell you what we see on the roof.
Redwood needles are small, and they pack. In a gutter they knit together with tanoak leaves, bay leaves and twigs into a mat that holds water long after a storm passes. Dave Stankas has called redwood, oak and bay debris “extraordinarily acidic,” hard on the metal it sits in. Guerneville’s mix of trees, its long wet winters and its share of part-time homes make gutter cleaning more than a chore here. Our Guerneville page has the town’s history, housing and fire maps.

Why does a part-time Guerneville home need a cleaning schedule?
Because nobody is there to see the overflow. Census estimates count 788 of Guerneville’s 3,181 housing units as seasonal or occasional homes, about one in four. A gutter that clogs in a December storm can spill against the walls for weeks before the owner visits. A fall cleaning, booked ahead, takes that off the list.
Storms here come in long runs. Two volunteer CoCoRaHS rain gauges near town caught about 12 inches across the February 26 and 27, 2019 readings, and the river crested at 45.38 feet on the National Weather Service gauge, more than 13 feet over flood stage. Four winters later, a gauge two miles south-southwest of town logged 30.60 inches between December 26, 2022 and January 16, 2023. Gutters need to be empty before a stretch like that, not halfway through it.
Summer brings a different reason. Guerneville lies in the State Responsibility Area, and Sonoma County’s defensible space inspection form lists removing leaves, needles and other vegetation from roofs and gutters under Public Resources Code 4291. Dry needles in a gutter are what an ember finds first. Owners who want both seasons covered can plan yearly exterior care around them through our Peace of Mind Program.
From a customer
“This is our 3rd year under their care. We live in the Redwoods and our roof and gutters fill to the brim with leaves and needles. When they are done, it is spotless.”
FAQ
Guerneville gutter cleaning FAQ
Can you clean the roof and the gutters on the same visit?
Yes, and under redwoods it usually makes sense. Needles on the roof wash into the gutters with the next rain, so clearing only the gutters buys less time. We sweep the roof, clean the gutters by hand and flush the downspouts, and if moss has started, we can talk about moss removal and treatment.
What if I'm not in Guerneville when you clean?
That’s common with second homes. We can schedule the visit, do the work and report back on what we found. Nancy T. wrote that the crew cleaned up around the house and let her know “the conditions that they found,” and other reviewers mention before and after pictures. Just make sure we can reach the roofline and get through any side gates.
Is gutter cleaning part of fire safety in Guerneville?
Yes. Keeping roofs and gutters clear of leaves and needles is on Sonoma County’s checklist for homes in the State Responsibility Area, which covers Guerneville, under state law and county Code Chapter 13A. Questions about inspections go to Permit Sonoma Fire Prevention at (707) 565-2361. A late spring cleaning gets the house ready before the dry months.
Will a gutter cleaning help when the Russian River floods?
No. River flooding comes from the river, and no gutter changes that. What a clean gutter does is send roof water down the downspouts and away from the walls during those same storms, instead of over the edge onto siding, decks and foundations. On a house already facing high water nearby, that’s one less source of trouble.
