Can old gutters on a Guerneville house be repaired?

Often, yes. Leaking corners, loose hangers, sagging runs and crushed downspouts can usually be fixed without replacing the whole system. When a section has rusted through, or the fascia behind it has rotted, we say so and list the replacement separately. Every repair starts with a look at the house and a written proposal.

More than half of Guerneville’s homes were built before 1960, and about a third before 1940, by Census Bureau estimates. On a house that old, the gutters may be the original metal, a later replacement or a patchwork of both, and years of wet needles sitting in them take a toll. Dave Stankas has said redwood, oak and bay debris rots out a gutter rapidly. Our gutter repair page lists the common fixes; here is how Guerneville’s conditions bear on them. The Guerneville page covers the town.

What tests Guerneville gutters hardest?

Long storms. Between December 26, 2022 and January 16, 2023, a volunteer rain gauge just south-southwest of town collected 30.60 inches, close to the Santa Rosa airport’s normal for an entire year. Three weeks of that finds every weak seam, loose hanger and undersized outlet, and the leaks show up as stained siding and soft fascia.

High water adds its own wear. The Russian River topped the 32-foot flood stage on the Guerneville gauge in February 2019 and crested at 45.38 feet, a level at which the Weather Service expects much of downtown to be under water. On low lots, floodwater can leave mud and debris around downspout outlets and splash blocks. Once the river drops, check that every downspout still connects at the top and drains at the bottom.

Raised houses have their own repair list. On a home lifted above the flood level, downspouts drop a long way, so loose straps and separated joints are worth checking every fall. The water at the bottom also needs a path that keeps it out of the space underneath, which Sonoma County’s flood program limits to storage. We check those joints and straps from the top of each run to the bottom, and anything that needs replacing goes into the written proposal.

FAQ

Guerneville gutter repair FAQ

Seams, corners and end caps are joints, and joints are where old sealant gives out first, especially in a gutter that holds wet needles for months. We clean the joint, reseal or refasten it and run water through to test it. If the metal itself has thinned, a new corner or end piece is the better fix.

Usually. We check the fascia board first, since a hanger can’t hold in soft wood, then refasten the run with the right fall toward its outlets. Under redwoods, the weight of wet needles and standing water is a common reason a run starts to pull, so we may suggest a cleaning schedule or guards to keep it from happening again.

It depends on the metal. If the runs are sound and the trouble is at joints, hangers and downspouts, repair makes sense. If rust has eaten through in several places, or the profile no longer matches anything new, new gutters are the better spend. We’ll walk you through what we found and which way we’d go.

Yes. Once the water is down and the house is safe to work around, we can look over the gutters and downspouts, clear mud and debris from the outlets, refasten loose sections and tell you what needs replacing. Call (707) 940-7875 to get on the schedule, and we’ll put anything beyond small fixes in a written proposal.
