Spring, fall or both: when do Napa gutters get cleaned?

Twice a year suits many Napa houses with trees nearby: once in late spring, ahead of the city’s June 1 weed abatement deadline, and once in fall before the storms. NOAA’s normals for the Napa State Hospital station show 2.77 inches in November and 5.53 in December, after a summer with almost none.

The City of Napa asks owners to limb trees up 6 feet, cut weeds to 4 inches and clear combustible debris 30 feet from every structure, all by June 1 and kept up through fire season, which CAL FIRE usually ends around November 1. Dry leaves packed along a roof edge sit well inside that 30 feet. Then, just as fire season winds down, the rain starts. Our gutter cleaning visits in Napa are timed around both.

Who is responsible for the street tree dropping leaves on my Napa roof?

You are, for routine care. The City of Napa says street trees are typically owned by the adjacent property owner, and Municipal Code 12.44 gives that owner routine pruning, done under a Street Tree Pruning Permit from Parks and Recreation. Many street trees stand within ten feet of the curb, close enough to reach a front gutter.

The city’s urban forestry page explains that permit, filed at the Parks and Recreation office at 1500 Jefferson Street, and notes that city crews prune street trees for hazards and clearance, not for looks. Napa is a Tree City USA, and since 1990 city staff and volunteers have planted an estimated 800-plus trees on Arbor Day alone. That canopy is good for the street, and it keeps gutters busy.

Clearing the trough is half of a visit; the other half is running water through every downspout to prove the path drains all the way down. What comes out goes to the yard waste, not the storm drain, and the ground around the house is cleaned up before we leave. Sandy Y. wrote that “you would never have known they were there except for the fact I have clean gutters and skylights!”

FAQ

Napa gutter cleaning FAQ

The city’s notice doesn’t name gutters. It asks owners to clear combustible debris within 30 feet of structures and keep it cleared through fire season, with inspections starting June 1, and dry leaves on a roof edge fit that description. Inside a Very High fire hazard zone, state defensible space law goes further and names the roof itself.

Yes. Coast redwoods grow in the county, Bothe-Napa Valley State Park among the places, and their needles mat down and hold water. Nina M., a Google reviewer who lives among redwoods, wrote that “our roof and gutters fill to the brim with leaves and needles. When they are done, it is spotless.”

Yes, through our Peace of Mind Program, which puts your exterior care on a yearly schedule built around what the house needs. For a Napa home with trees over the roof, that can mean a spring visit before fire season and a fall visit before the rain, arranged once rather than remembered twice.

Yes. Burned leaves and ash wash into the downspouts with the first rain, so it’s worth clearing them before the storms. Chelsy M., one of our Google reviewers, wrote that she “could not believe the amount of burned leaves from recent fires and also how wonderful they look now.” We collect the debris rather than rinsing it down the driveway.
