Can you fix gutters a storm or a falling branch damaged in Sonoma?
Yes. Bent runs, split seams, hangers torn out of the fascia and downspouts knocked loose are all repair work, and a damaged length can often be replaced without redoing the whole house. We come out, look at what the storm did and send a written proposal for putting it right.
Big storms are the stress test for Sonoma gutters. The Sonoma co-op weather station recorded 13.48 inches between February 12 and 20, 1986, and 7.72 inches from February 6 to 21, 2017. Before a storm in February 2024, the city warned that saturated ground raised the chance of nuisance flooding and of fallen branches and trees. A limb across the eave or a week of overflow will find the weakest seam, hanger or elbow on the house, and that is where gutter repair starts. What should I do right after a storm damages a gutter in Sonoma?
Keep people clear of any section hanging loose, take photos from the ground, and steer water away from the foundation with a temporary extension until the repair. Note where the water went during the storm. Those details, plus the photos, let us plan the fix before anyone climbs up.
Fire-season rules point at the same branches. For parcels in the Very High hazard area above the Plaza, the Sonoma Valley Fire District asks owners to remove dead and dying trees, branches and shrubs next to or hanging over buildings, and to keep every branch 10 feet back from a chimney outlet. A dead limb over the roof is a fire concern in August and a hazard to the gutter in January, so trimming it in the dry months can save a repair.
A storm repair is also the time to look at the whole system, not only the spot that failed. Overflow can soften the fascia behind a run, open a seam slightly or pack an elbow with leaves, and none of that shows from the driveway. We check every run on the visit, and small rotted sections fall under our dry rot repair work. Kristal M. noted one more thing in her review: “We even got before and after pictures.”
FAQ
Sonoma gutter repair FAQ
Does storm damage mean replacing every gutter on the house?
Often not. If a branch bent one section, that length can be swapped and the hangers around it reset. When the storm exposed rust and failed joints along the whole house, the written proposal lays out both paths, a targeted repair and a new installation, so you can weigh them side by side.
My gutter overflows in heavy rain but doesn't leak. Is that a repair?
Sometimes. Overflow can mean a clog, a run that has lost its slope toward the outlet, or one downspout trying to drain too much roof. A clog is a cleaning job; a sagging run or a missing outlet is a repair, and the fix may be as simple as adding a downspout. We work out which it is before recommending anything.
Should dead branches over the roof come down before winter?
If they’re dead or dying, yes, and in the Very High zone the fire district already asks for it. A limb that snaps in a winter storm can land right on the eave and take a run of gutter with it. Hire a tree service for the limbs, then have us check the gutters and hangers underneath.
Can a gutter repair in Sonoma wait until spring?
A slow drip at one joint can usually wait a short while. A gutter hanging loose, or a downspout emptying against the foundation, does more damage with every storm, and Sonoma’s wettest months run from December through February.
