Gutter Repair for Petaluma Homes Built From the 1970s to the 1990s

Nearly half of Petaluma’s homes were built between 1970 and 1999. We repair the seams, hangers, end caps and outlets that give out first on gutters that age, before a storm finds them.

What wears out first on gutters from the 1970s, 80s and 90s?

Usually the joints and the fasteners. Sealant at seams, corners and end caps dries out and cracks with age, and hangers loosen as the wood behind them weathers. On Petaluma houses from those decades we reseal or replace failing joints, re-fasten loose runs into solid fascia and rework downspouts that no longer drain well.

Our Petaluma town page is about the city’s oldest houses. This page is about the bigger group. The Census Bureau’s 2020-2024 estimates count about 4,350 homes built in the 1970s, 3,700 in the 1980s and 3,900 in the 1990s, together close to half of Petaluma’s 25,100 housing units. Gutters on those houses have weathered decades of winters, and when only a few joints have failed, gutter repair is the sensible first step.

How hard do Petaluma storms push an aging gutter?

Hard enough to find every weak joint. The Petaluma Airport weather station logged 5.17 inches on its October 24, 2021 reading and 14.44 inches between December 26, 2022 and January 16, 2023. A gutter that drips a little in an ordinary shower can overflow, pull loose or split a seam under that kind of load.

Those totals come from the station’s daily cooperative observer records, and its NOAA 1991-2020 normals make February, at 5.23 inches, Petaluma’s wettest month. After a season like that, weak spots show up as stripes on siding, peeling paint on the fascia, or a puddle that keeps returning to the same corner of the foundation. Each one is worth fixing before the next storm series.

When a gutter has pulled loose, the trouble is often the wood rather than the metal. Fastening back into soft fascia won’t hold for long, so small rotted sections get repaired first as part of our dry rot repair work. Tami R. described the far end of the scale in her Google review, gutters she believed had never been changed on a 45-year-old house: “They are now beautiful.”

Petaluma gutter repair FAQ

Usually because the run has lost its pitch and water pools away from the outlet, or because the gutter has pulled away from the fascia and tipped back. Both are repair jobs: the hangers get reset to restore the slope and the run is re-fastened. Water spilling over the back edge soaks fascia and siding, so it’s worth fixing before the wettest weeks.

Yes. A long run with a single outlet can’t always keep up in a heavy storm, and the overflow tends to show at the far end. A second downspout splits the load. Edward, one of our Google reviewers, mentions the crew “putting in some needed downspouts on my house.” We pick the new outlet’s spot with you, where the ground can take the water.

Walk the house during or just after a rain. Look for water sheeting over the front edge, drips at seams and corners, stains or peeling paint on the fascia, a run that dips in the middle, and downspouts that leave a puddle or a trench at their base. Note where each one is and mention them when you call (707) 940-7875.

Late summer and early fall are easiest. June through September bring almost no rain at the airport station, so the gutters are dry and the work gets done before November, when the normals start climbing toward February’s peak. Leaks found mid-winter still get fixed; it just means working between storms.
