Sebastopol Gutter Cleaning Under Oaks, Bays and Redwoods

Sebastopol’s trees stay, and so do the leaves they drop. We clear gutters by hand in the fall, flush each downspout and tidy up around the house, ahead of the three wettest months.

Gutter cleaning · Sebastopol

What month should Sebastopol gutters get cleaned?

October or November, once most leaves are down and before December. At Graton, the nearest NOAA normals station, December brings 8.34 inches in an average year, with January and February close behind, while June through September together see well under an inch. Under oaks, a second cleaning in spring helps.

Fall in Sebastopol drops a mixed load. Ragle Ranch Regional Park, on the west side of town, is noted for its oaks, with willows and ashes along its creek trails, and the city’s tree ordinance protects native oaks, bays, maples, alders and redwoods on private lots. Broad leaves lie flat in a gutter, redwood needles fill the gaps between them, and the first long storm turns the whole layer into a dam. Our gutter cleaning visits clear that layer before it sets, and our Sebastopol page has more on the trees.

Where does the water go when a Sebastopol gutter overflows?

Down the walls, into the yard and eventually toward the Laguna de Santa Rosa. The Laguna’s floodplain can hold more than 80,000 acre-feet of stormwater in a heavy winter, but a clogged gutter sends water to the wrong places first: siding, window frames, crawl space vents and foundations. Clean gutters keep the roof’s water in the downspouts.

The numbers explain the timing. The NOAA monthly normals for Graton add up to 23.70 inches for December, January and February, close to 60 percent of a 39.94-inch year. Rain falls on about 78 days a year there, so a gutter left full in November has a long season of overflow ahead of it.

Some of what comes out of a gutter matters to the city, too. Sebastopol’s storm water program runs under a state permit that requires it to keep pollution out of its drains, and most of those drains empty into the Laguna. Debris that falls into the street during any cleanup belongs in the yard waste bin, not down the inlet, and our crews clean up around the house before they leave.

“They cleaned up so well when finished that you would never have known they were there except for the fact I have clean gutters and skylights!”

FAQ

Sebastopol gutter cleaning FAQ

It depends on the yard. Oak leaves arrive in a rush each fall and mat flat over the outlets, while redwood needles fall through the year and pack into whatever gaps the leaves leave. A yard with both gives you the two problems at once, and Dave has called both kinds of debris acidic enough to rot a gutter that holds them.

Every one. After the gutter is empty, we run water through each downspout to make sure it drains all the way to the ground, since clogs often hide in the elbows where you can’t see them. If a downspout empties against the foundation or into a low spot, we’ll point it out so it can be moved.

If your gutters fill every year, a plan saves you remembering. Our Peace of Mind Program sets up yearly exterior care around what the house needs, which can mean a fall gutter cleaning plus a spring visit under oaks. Ceylan C. wrote of using us for roof and gutter cleaning “for many years now.”

Hand clearing of every run, flushing each downspout, a look at seams, hangers and any covers, and cleanup around the house. If we find loose sections or leaks, we tell you before doing anything extra and put repairs in writing. Shaded roofs can get moss removal on the same visit.
