Gutter Cleaning in Sonoma for Fire Season and the Winter Rain

Sonoma’s fire district enforces its roof and gutter rules all year, and most of the town’s rain falls from December through February. Every run gets cleared, every downspout flushed, and the yard cleaned up afterward.

When is the right time to clean gutters in Sonoma?

Before the first real storm in fall, plus a spring visit if trees hang over the roof. NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals for the Sonoma co-op station show 1.52 inches in October and 3.01 in November before December’s 5.83, with almost nothing from June through September. Debris piles up all summer, then the first storms push it toward the downspouts.

Rain is only half of Sonoma’s schedule. The Sonoma Valley Fire District, which serves the city, says its defensible space rules are enforceable all year, and they reach the roof edge. Leaves and needles that collect in a gutter over the dry months are the same material the district wants off the roof before fire season, and they’re what clogs the downspouts once the storms come. Our gutter cleaning visits in Sonoma are planned with both in mind.

Do Sonoma's fire rules actually cover gutters?

Yes, in two ways. On parcels inside a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone, the Sonoma Valley Fire District applies state law, PRC 4291, which calls for removing leaves and needles from roofs and gutters. On the rest of the city’s parcels, the California Fire Code as Sonoma adopted it bars combustible waste from remaining on a roof.

The district lays out both sets of rules on its defensible space requirements page, with separate sheets for city parcels inside and outside the Very High zone. The Very High sheet gives the reason in plain terms: sparks and embers carried through the air during a fire can land on a roof and ignite what has piled up there. It also asks owners to take out dead and dying branches that hang over buildings.

Oak country starts at the edge of town. Montini Open Space Preserve, 98 acres the city has owned since 2014, with its entrance on Fourth Street West, is mostly oak woodland, and oak leaves are on Dave’s list of debris acidic enough to eat through a gutter when they sit wet. We clear the troughs, run water through each downspout and tell you what we found up there. Nancy T. wrote that the crew “let me know the conditions that they found.”

FAQ

Sonoma gutter cleaning FAQ

Not for city parcels, going by the fire district’s own guidance. The Sonoma Valley Fire District says the state and local vegetation rules are enforceable year-round. In practice, a cleaning in late spring keeps the roof edge clear through the dry months, and a second one in fall gets the gutters ready for the storms.

Every run is cleared and every downspout flushed, since downspout flushing is part of our gutter cleaning. The ground around the house is cleaned up before we go, and anything that looks worth fixing, such as a dripping seam or a loose hanger, is noted for you to decide on later. Several Google reviewers mention getting before and after pictures.

Yes. Roof cleaning and moss removal are part of our work, and doing the roof first keeps its debris out of freshly cleared gutters. Steve F., one of our Google reviewers, described a complicated roof with many levels and wrote that the crew did “an incredible job cleaning the roof” as well as the gutters, skylights and solar panels.

The City of Sonoma’s Public Works Department, at 707-938-3332 during regular business hours, takes reports of local flooding and of downed trees that aren’t blocking a road; after hours, the city lists the police non-emergency line, 707-996-3601. Keeping your own gutters clear, and leaves out of the street, gives those inlets less to handle.
