How many cleanings a year does a Calistoga gutter need?
Twice a year for most homes under trees: in late spring as fire season opens, and in fall before the November and December storms. NOAA’s normals for the city’s station show only 0.45 inches of rain from June through September, then 7.95 inches in December. A house with little canopy overhead can usually get by with the fall visit.
Leaves and rain don’t keep the same schedule here. Deciduous oaks such as the valley oak drop through autumn, while the station’s normals climb slowly, 1.83 inches in October and 3.76 in November, before December’s soaking. That leaves weeks for a gutter to fill before anything washes through it. Dave Stankas counts oak leaves among the debris he calls “extraordinarily acidic,” the kind that rots a gutter out quickly when it sits wet all winter. Our gutter cleaning clears every run by hand, flushes each downspout and cleans up below.

What does fire season mean for gutters in Calistoga?
Clearing them early. The City expects tall grass, brush and weeds cut at the beginning of fire season and kept down through the summer, and parcels in its Very High zone carry 100 feet of clearance. Dry leaves left in a gutter through those months sit right at the roof edge, so a late-spring cleaning belongs on the same list.
Calistoga keeps its oaks: the valley oak is a protected tree under the City’s tree removal permit rules, so for many houses the practical plan is to leave the tree standing and clear its leaves on a schedule. Four miles south, Bothe-Napa Valley State Park grows coast redwood and Douglas-fir, and where conifers like those overhang a roof, needles mix in with the leaves and settle into a dense mat at the bottom of the gutter.
Winter then tests whatever is left in there. Between December 26, 2022 and January 16, 2023, the Calistoga station recorded 17.11 inches, and the storms of December 28, 2005 through January 1, 2006 added 7.57 inches in five days. A downspout choked with leaves can’t move water like that, and the overflow lands along the foundation. Clearing the gutters before the first big storm, then checking them after a long wet stretch, keeps that water on its way. Our Calistoga page covers the town’s fire history and hazard zones.

FAQ
Calistoga gutter cleaning FAQ
Do you clean gutters on Calistoga wineries and apartment buildings?
Yes. Wineries, apartment owners and HOAs are among the customers named on our Google profiles, along with schools and homeowners, and about 16% of Calistoga’s homes are in buildings of 20 to 49 units. A multi-building property starts with a site visit and a written proposal that lists each roofline and its downspouts.
Is a June gutter cleaning too early in Calistoga?
Not when the trees over the roof are done dropping for spring. The goal of an early cleaning is to get dry debris off the roof edge before the hot months, the same season the City wants weeds and brush cut. If deciduous oaks overhang the house, plan a second visit in fall, before December.
Can Calistoga gutters be cleaned out with a leaf blower?
Not a gas-powered one. The City’s tree permit packet cites Municipal Code 8.21.020, which prohibits gas-powered leaf blowers. We clear gutters by hand anyway: blowing wet leaves out of a gutter mostly scatters them over the roof, the deck and the garden. Each downspout is flushed once the gutter is empty.
Can Calistoga cleanings go on a yearly schedule?
Yes, through our Peace of Mind Program, a yearly care plan built around the exterior work your house needs. For a Calistoga home under oaks that might mean a spring and a fall gutter cleaning, with roof cleaning added if leaves and needles collect on the shingles above.
