Gutter Repair in San Rafael for Leaks, Sags and Downspouts

Most San Rafael houses predate 1980, and their gutters show it in a hard winter. We reseal open seams, re-fasten sagging runs and move downspouts so water drains away from the house, serving the city from our Santa Rosa office.

Gutter repair · San Rafael

What gutter problems turn up on older San Rafael homes?

Seams that have opened, runs that sag between loose fasteners, corners and end caps that drip, and downspouts that are crushed or empty in the wrong place. Half of San Rafael’s homes were built by 1968, by Census Bureau estimates, so many gutters here have been through dozens of winters. Most of these problems are repairable without a new system.

January 2017 shows what a San Rafael gutter can be asked to carry. NOAA’s daily records for the Civic Center station add up to 21.26 inches that month, about three times the January normal of 7.13, followed by 14.70 inches in February. A gutter with one weak seam or a loose hanger can get through an ordinary month; a month like that finds it. Our gutter repair visits start with every run, so the leak you’ve noticed isn’t the only one fixed.

Where should downspouts drain on a San Rafael lot?

Onto ground that can soak the water up, away from the foundation, walkways and the property line. On the low-lying east side, where storm drains back up when heavy rain meets a high tide, water piped to the curb may have nowhere to go, so a planted area is often the better outlet. We pick spots with you on site.

Most repairs need no City review. Roof changes to Eichler and Alliance homes need an administrative permit, but San Rafael’s design review page lists regular maintenance and repairs among the projects that need no design review at all. A repair that grows into a new layout is a different job, and we’ll say so at the visit; our San Rafael gutter installation page covers that side. Nor-Cal Maintenance works under California contractor license #772419 in the C-61/D24 metal products class, which you can confirm on the CSLB license lookup.

What comes out of a failing gutter shouldn’t reach the bay. The City’s construction pollution page calls runoff from streets and paved areas a major source of pollution in San Francisco Bay and says spills shouldn’t reach gutters, streets, storm drains or creeks. Old sealant, metal trimmings and the wet debris pulled from a leaking run go in the trash, not down the curb. Our San Rafael page covers the City’s other rules for roofs and gutters.

FAQ

San Rafael gutter repair FAQ

Usually a sag. When fasteners loosen, the gutter dips between them, water pools at the low point and spills over the front. A blocked outlet or downspout elbow causes the same spill at the end of a run. Re-fastening to solid fascia and clearing the outlet fixes most of these, after a check that the wood behind is sound.

That depends on how many places it fails. One or two leaking joints or a loose run make repair sensible; leaks at joint after joint, or rust through the bottom, usually don’t. Dave gives his view on site and then in writing, the way Cory D. described it: “a verbal summary of their recommendations which was immediately followed up in a written estimate.”

Leave it until it’s safe to look; a section hanging off the fascia can fall. Note where water is pouring against the house, take a photo from the ground and call (707) 940-7875. If the street is flooding or a tree is down, report it to the City at (415) 485-3355 during business hours or (415) 485-3000 after hours.

Call (707) 940-7875 or use the form, and describe where the water goes in a storm; photos from the ground help. We serve San Rafael from our Santa Rosa office, about 41 road miles north. The crew checks each run, you get recommendations and a written estimate, and the repair is scheduled from there.
