When do Cloverdale gutters need cleaning?
Before December. The NOAA station in Cloverdale averages 41.73 inches of rain a year, and about 60 percent of it falls from December through February, after a summer with almost none. A second visit in spring helps where firs and oaks hang over the roof. Every gutter is cleared by hand and each downspout flushed.
Cloverdale’s west side climbs into the hills, and the trees come with it. The city’s tree preservation chapter protects native oaks, California bay, Douglas fir, ponderosa pine and large redwoods, with a stated goal of no net loss of canopy, and the new Soda Springs Ranch preserve just west of town holds oak woodland, fir forest and redwood groves. That mix drops broad leaves and needles on Cloverdale roofs through the year. Our gutter cleaning visits clear both kinds out.

Where does gutter debris end up in Cloverdale?
In the Russian River, if it reaches the street. Cloverdale’s storm water page says runoff can wash leaf debris into storm drains, that storm water never goes to the treatment plant, and that the city’s streets and gutters are part of the river’s headwaters. When we clean, the debris is bagged and hauled away.
Big storms test even a clean gutter. The Cloverdale station recorded 14.20 inches over four days in November 2024, including 6.15 inches on one observation day, and 23.98 inches from December 26, 2022 through January 16, 2023 (NOAA normals for the station). When a gutter overflows in rain like that, the water lands at the foundation and along the walkways instead of going down the downspouts.
Spring has its own reason. The Cloverdale Fire Protection District starts weed abatement inspections in May, and CAL FIRE’s defensible space advice includes clearing dead leaves and needles from roofs and gutters. A May cleaning takes care of both before the hot months, when Cloverdale summers can pass 100 degrees. Our Peace of Mind Program can put the fall and spring visits on a yearly schedule.
FAQ
Cloverdale gutter cleaning FAQ
Do you flush the downspouts as well?
Every one. A gutter can look empty from the ladder while an elbow down the line is packed with needles. We run water through each outlet after the gutter is clear, so you know it drains before the December rain. Paul D. wrote that the crew “made sure everything was functioning perfectly before they left.”
Are fir needles as hard on gutters as oak leaves?
Both cause trouble. Dave names redwoods, pine needles, eucalyptus, oaks and bay leaves as debris that’s “extraordinarily acidic” and rots out a gutter rapidly when it sits wet. Cloverdale protects several of those trees, so the debris keeps coming. We clear both kinds and check that each outlet drains.
Can you clean gutters on a hillside house with a steep drop below?
Yes. Hillside homes are routine for the crew. We plan ladder placement and access from what we see at the estimate, and the written proposal notes anything unusual about the site. Nancy T. summed up the appeal: “I was so happy not to go on the roof myself.”
How do I set up a gutter cleaning in Cloverdale?
Call (707) 940-7875 or send the form on this page with your address. We’ll look at the roof, the trees above it and how the downspouts drain, then send a written proposal. If you’d like spring and fall visits, ask about putting them on a yearly plan.
