Gutter Cleaning on the Tiburon Peninsula
Tiburon Fire asks owners to keep roofs and rain gutters clear of dead leaves and needles, and the Town lists clearing gutters first among its flood steps. Our gutter cleaning covers both.

How much rain do Tiburon gutters handle?
NOAA has no climate normals station on the peninsula, so the nearest ones stand in. Richmond, about 5.5 miles across the bay, averages 24.41 inches a year under the 1991-2020 normals, and Muir Woods, about 6 miles west in a redwood canyon, averages 36.24. At both stations, most of the year’s rain falls from November through March.
Whatever the exact total on your street, the pattern holds: a dry summer and early fall let leaves, needles and twigs build up on the roof, and then the storms wash all of it into the gutters at once. Richmond and Muir Woods both get more than four-fifths of their rain in those five months. Our gutter cleaning visits empty the gutters by hand, run water down every downspout and pick up whatever lands below, so a Tiburon roof drains the way it should when the rain starts.

What does Tiburon Fire ask homeowners to do about gutters?
Keep them clear of dead leaves and needles. The Tiburon Fire Protection District’s defensible space page tells owners to remove dead or dry leaves and pine needles from the yard, roof and rain gutters, to cut back branches that hang over the roof, and to keep dead branches 10 feet from the chimney.
Winter brings the second reason. The Town’s flood preparedness page puts clearing gutters, downspouts and nearby storm drains of leaves and debris first on its list of steps before expected flooding, ahead of moving cars to higher ground and setting out sandbags. It singles out low-lying parts of town for tidal flooding during king tides, and it keeps self-serve sand and empty bags at Teather Park on Beach Road and the Blackie’s Pasture overflow lot.
Farther out from the house, the district’s Zone 2 advice reads like a list of what ends up in gutters: fallen leaves, needles, twigs, bark, cones and small branches. Tiburon also regulates leaf blower types and hours, according to the Town’s permit guide. If a street drain near your house clogs during a storm, the Public Works FAQ sends that call to the Maintenance Division at (415) 435-7399.
FAQ
Tiburon gutter cleaning FAQ
What time of year suits a Tiburon gutter cleaning?
Late spring and fall cover most houses. A spring visit clears what the trees shed over winter before fire season, when Tiburon Fire wants fallen leaves and needles cleared again and again. A fall visit, before November’s rain, clears summer’s litter. Homes under heavy pine or oak cover may need both every year.
Do you flush the downspouts on hillside homes?
Yes. Every downspout gets water run through it after the gutters are cleared, and on a hillside lot we follow it to where it lets out, whether that’s a splash block, a drain line or a ditch near the street. A line that has silted up downhill can push water back into the gutter during the next storm.
Will you clean up what comes out of the gutters?
Yes. Debris is collected rather than left in the planting beds or washed toward the street, and the ground below gets picked up before we go. Michael G. wrote, “Our roof, gutters and the sidewalks and patio around our house were immaculate when they finished their work.”
Can Tiburon gutter cleaning be part of a yearly plan?
Yes. Through our Peace of Mind Program you set up yearly exterior care around what the house needs, so the gutters get cleaned on a schedule instead of after the first overflow. Other work, such as solar panel cleaning, can be scheduled with it.
