Gutter Guards Where Tiburon's Oaks Are Here to Stay

Tiburon requires a permit to remove or alter its oaks and heritage trees, so the tree over your roof may be there to stay. We serve the peninsula with gutter guards matched to what it drops.

Can I just cut back the oak over my gutters?

Not without checking first. Tiburon’s tree rules protect coast live oaks, California black oaks and other native oaks, plus any heritage tree over 60 inches around at 24 inches above the ground, and altering one in a single-family zone takes a permit. When the tree stays, a gutter guard keeps its leaves out of the gutter.

The same rules flag the fast growers. Tiburon’s tree permit page lists Blue Gum Eucalyptus, Monterey Pine, Monterey Cypress and Coast Redwood as undesirable trees that need a permit to plant in single-family zones, though an existing one can still qualify as protected by its size. Where those trees already stand, their needles and narrow leaves are the debris to plan for. Dave names redwoods, pine needles, eucalyptus, oaks and bay leaves as “extraordinarily acidic” debris that rots out a gutter, which is why the right gutter guard matters here.

How exposed is Tiburon to wildfire embers?

Moderately, on paper. In CAL FIRE’s hazard layer, Tiburon’s town boundary takes in moderate zones plus one small high zone. Even so, the Town’s February 2025 fire safety notice warned that “Wind-blown embers can travel far ahead of a wildfire, igniting homes and landscapes,” and asked owners to harden their homes.

That notice, posted by the Town of Tiburon on February 19, 2025, pairs home hardening with vegetation management and points residents to Tiburon Fire for more resources, along with a self-assessment. A gutter guard is one small part of hardening: it keeps dry leaves from collecting along the roof edge, where a stray ember would find fuel. It doesn’t replace clearing the roof, and it doesn’t give the house a fire rating.

The Town’s tree permit page also has an emergency exception: if the fire marshal declares a tree a fire hazard, Town officials can authorize its removal or alteration without a permit. Short of that, Planning at (415) 435-7390 is the place to ask about trimming. We work on the gutters, not the trees, choosing from 27 types of covers, Gutterglove and Amerimax among them, to suit what falls on your Tiburon roof.

FAQ

Tiburon gutter guards FAQ

Yes. Needles find their way through large openings, so a finer mesh suits them. Oak leaves are broad and mostly rest on top, so the cover needs to let them dry and blow away. If your yard has both, we choose for the harder of the two. Our post on choosing gutter covers goes deeper.

Tiburon Fire’s Zone 0 guidance, for the first five feet from the house, is about clearing fallen leaves and needles regularly and often during fire season. A guard keeps that litter out of the gutter itself, but the roof surface and the ground below still need clearing. Ask Fire Prevention at (415) 435-7202 how the district applies Zone 0 to your lot.

A cleaning first, then a check of every seam, hanger and outlet, with repairs made before anything is covered. Then the guard is fitted section by section to your gutter and roof edge. Kelly P. wrote that the crew “paid attention to detail when cleaning our gutters, installing the gutter guards, and powerwashing the back of our home.”

Dave looks at the trees, the roof pitch and the condition of the gutters, answers your questions and then sends a written proposal. Misti W. wrote that he “identified a few issues during my estimate process that I didn’t realize existed,” which gave Misti time to decide how and when to repair them.
