Gutter Installation for Sonoma Houses Ready for a New System

Sonoma built more homes in the 1970s than in any other decade, and a gutter hung back then has been through about fifty rainy seasons. We take the old system down, lay out new runs and set each downspout where its water can soak in.

What goes into replacing the gutters on a Sonoma house?

A walk around the house, then a written plan. Dave looks at where the old runs leak or sag, which fascia boards need attention and where each downspout should empty. The proposal covers removal, new runs, outlets and painting if you want it, so you can see the whole job before anything comes down.

Sonoma’s housing has a clear peak. Out of roughly 6,000 homes in the city, the Census Bureau’s 2020-2024 estimates count about 1,435 built in the 1970s, more than in any other decade, and another 860 or so from the 2000s. When joints leak along a whole run, or the trough has thinned where wet leaves sat for years, a new system usually makes more sense than another round of patches. Our gutter installation page explains the work itself; this one covers what’s particular to Sonoma.

Where should new downspouts send the water in Sonoma?

Onto ground that can absorb it, away from the foundation and the street. The City of Sonoma’s stormwater program notes that runoff reaching its storm drains flows untreated into Nathanson, Sonoma and Fryer creeks, and it encourages permeable surfaces. A new layout is the easiest moment to aim outlets at planting beds instead of pavement.

The city’s Stormwater Pollution Prevention Program names pet waste, pesticides, oils, trash and sediment among the pollutants it wants kept out of those creeks, which carry on to San Pablo Bay. A gutter replacement makes its own small mess of metal trimmings, old fasteners, sealant and the grit that comes down with the old runs. Our crew cleans up the work area before leaving, so none of it ends up in the street gutter out front.

Houses near the Plaza raise a second question. Chapter 19.42 of the city’s development code, which guides work in the historic overlay zone, asks for roofing materials compatible with a building’s original style, and the city keeps a seven-member Historic Preservation Commission. New gutters change how an eave reads from the street, so check with Planning before anything is ordered for a house in the overlay. Painted gutters, which we install, can be finished to suit older trim.

Look at the pattern. One drip at a corner is a repair. Leaks at seam after seam, hangers pulling out along a whole side, or rust showing through the bottom point toward replacement. Dave walks the full roofline at the estimate, and the written proposal says which way he’d go and why, with a repair option where one makes sense.

Painted gutters are part of our work, and on an older Sonoma house both the color and the line of the gutter show from the street, so we talk through them at the estimate. If the house is in the historic overlay zone, settle the plan with the city’s Planning staff first. The written proposal then lists exactly what gets painted.

They can on new construction or a rebuild. CAL FIRE’s maps show a Very High hazard area on the hills just north of the Plaza, and the state’s wildland-urban interface code sets gutter requirements for new buildings where it applies: noncombustible material and a way to keep debris from collecting. For a replacement on an existing house, the city’s building staff can say whether any of that reaches your project.

No. Sonoma City Hall is about 25 road miles from our Banyan Street office, and Sonoma County is the heart of the area we cover. Call (707) 940-7875 and Dave will set a time to walk the roofline, answer your questions and follow up with a written proposal, so nothing has to be decided at the door.
