Which gutter guard suits a Sonoma house?
The one matched to what actually lands in your gutters, then to the roof. The hills around Sonoma are oak and bay country, and broad leaves like theirs call for a different cover than redwood or pine needles do. Dave checks the debris and the pitch first, then recommends from the 27 cover types we carry.
Sonoma’s trees aren’t going anywhere, which shapes the gutter guard question here. Under the city’s tree ordinance, altering or removing a significant tree takes a permit, and on house lots that covers large private trees standing in a front or street-side setback. So the oak that shades the eave this year will likely shade it for decades, dropping into the same gutter every season. A cover lets you stop chasing those leaves up a ladder, on Sonoma lots big and small.

Does wildfire risk change the gutter guard choice in Sonoma?
It can. CAL FIRE’s hazard maps put a Very High area on the hillside just north of the Plaza, and the Sonoma Valley Fire District’s sheet for those parcels says roofs and gutters should be kept clear of debris because airborne embers can land there. A cover keeps much of that debris from collecting in the first place.
On CAL FIRE’s layer, most of the city sits outside any mapped zone, City Hall included, so for many Sonoma houses a cover is mainly about leaves and fewer trips up a ladder. Owners on the slopes above the Plaza can check a parcel on the State Fire Marshal’s fire hazard zone viewer. In October 2017 the Nuns Fire burned east and north of the city and merged with several other fires before it was contained.
Covers go on sound, clean gutters, so a guard job usually starts with a clean-out and any repairs the runs need. Gutterglove and Amerimax are among the brands Dave installs. For the trade-offs between mesh, screen and expanded metal, read our guide to gutter guard types; for fire season specifically, see ember-resistant gutter guards.
FAQ
Sonoma gutter guards FAQ
Can I prune the oak over my roof instead of adding covers?
Check with the city first. Sonoma’s tree ordinance requires a permit to alter or remove a significant tree, which on house lots means a private tree more than 4.5 feet around, measured 4.5 feet up, standing in a front or street-side setback. Where the tree has to stay as it is, a cover handles the leaves instead.
Should covers be metal on the hillside above the Plaza?
CAL FIRE’s home-hardening guidance calls for noncombustible gutter covers, and metal mesh, metal screen and expanded metal fit that description where plastic covers don’t. If your parcel is in or near the Very High area, mention it when you call, and Dave will start the recommendation from noncombustible options suited to your trees.
Do the gutters get cleaned before the guards go on?
Yes, as part of the job. The troughs are cleared and the downspouts flushed, then leaking seams or loose hangers are fixed before a cover is fastened over them, because a guard laid over a failing gutter only hides the problem. Kristin B. wrote that the crew came “to clean and fix the gutters and install gutter guards,” which is the usual order.
What do oak and bay leaves do to an uncovered gutter?
They hold water and add weight. Left wet in the trough, oak and bay leaves are hard on metal; Dave counts them among the most acidic debris a gutter sees, along with redwood, pine and eucalyptus. A heavy, soggy pack also strains the hangers over a few winters. Keeping most of it out is the main job of a cover.
