Gutter and Downspout Repair in Napa After a Wet Winter
January and February 2017 put more than 24 inches of rain on Napa, close to two and a half times normal. Winters like that find weak seams and swamped downspouts. We fix both and send the water somewhere it can soak in.

What do Napa gutters need fixed after a wet winter?
Usually a few specific things: seams and corners that started dripping, hangers that let go under wet leaves, and downspouts that clogged, split or emptied against the house. We repair what failed, check every other run while we’re up there, and reroute outlets so the water lands away from the foundation.
Napa’s ordinary winters are moderate; its bad ones are very wet. The Napa State Hospital weather station recorded more than 24 inches across January and February 2017, against a normal of about 10 for those two months, and the Napa River near Napa peaked at 15,900 cubic feet per second on January 8 that year. A season like that leaves marks on gutters: drips at the joints, runs pulled off the fascia, downspouts that couldn’t keep up. Gutter repair puts them right, and our Napa page covers the river’s bigger floods and the city’s older districts.

Where should a repaired downspout send its water in Napa?
Into soil or planting, a good distance from the house, rather than onto pavement that runs to the street. The City of Napa’s Cash for Grass terms describe a rain garden as a planted low spot that captures runoff from roofs, and they require one to sit at least 10 feet from building foundations.
The Cash for Grass terms add a rain garden bonus on top of the city’s lawn-conversion rebate, and the program is budgeted through June 2027, run by the Water Conservation Specialist at 707-257-9497 with inspections before and after. The garden itself is landscaping work. Extending or relocating the downspout that feeds it is gutter work, and it’s worth knowing the 10-foot rule before you pick the spot.
A repair visit also looks past the obvious leak. Water that ran behind a gutter all winter softens the fascia, and a hanger driven into soft wood won’t hold, so small rotted sections get repaired as part of the job under our dry rot repair work. Larry R.’s Google review sums up the drainage side in a phrase: “a couple of downspouts relocated for better drainage.”
FAQ
Napa gutter repair FAQ
Is it worth repairing gutters on a 1950s or 1960s Napa house?
Often, if the metal is still sound. About a quarter of Napa’s homes date from those two decades, by the Census Bureau’s estimates. One or two failed joints or a loose run make a repair the sensible choice; seams failing run after run, or a bottom rusted through, point to our Napa installation page instead.
Why does water pour over the corner of my gutter in a hard Napa storm?
Often because a roof valley above it funnels water from two roof planes into one spot, and the gutter can’t take it all at once. The fix is usually an added downspout near the corner or a reworked outlet, sometimes with the run’s slope reset. We check the valley and the outlet before recommending anything.
How soon after a storm should I check my gutters?
During the next rain, if you can watch from the ground. Overflow, drips at joints, water spraying from a downspout seam and puddles by the foundation are easiest to spot while it’s raining. Take photos, then call (707) 940-7875; Dave will come out, look at the whole system and follow up with a written proposal.
Can you fix a downspout that's crushed or pulled off the wall?
Yes. Crushed sections get replaced, loose straps get re-fastened to solid siding or trim, and a downspout that came apart at an elbow is reconnected and sealed. If it keeps getting hit by a car door, a mower or a trash bin, we can talk about moving it to a corner where it’s out of the way.
