Gutter Guards for Guerneville Homes in Redwood and Fire Country

Guerneville sits almost entirely in a High fire hazard zone, and its redwoods drop fine needles all year. A guard here gets chosen for small needles, heavy rain and the dry months in between.

Gutter guards · Guerneville

What gutter guard works in Guerneville?

One sized to redwood needles first. Dave Stankas chooses covers by the debris that lands on the roof, then by the roof’s pitch, and he carries 27 types because no single cover suits every house. For short redwood needles, that points toward a fine mesh, fitted so heavy winter rain still drops into the gutter.

Two facts shape gutter guards in Guerneville. CAL FIRE’s 2024-25 hazard maps put nearly the whole community in the High zone of the State Responsibility Area, and the town sits three miles south of Armstrong Redwoods, where State Parks lists tanoak, Douglas fir, California laurel and bigleaf maple among the redwoods. The debris is mixed, fine and constant, and what sits in a gutter matters in August as much as in January. See our gutter guards page for the products, and the Guerneville page for the town.

How close has wildfire come to Guerneville?

Close enough to empty the town. The Walbridge Fire, one of the lightning fires of August 2020, put all of Guerneville under an evacuation order on August 18, and Cal Fire put its size at 55,209 acres. It started just outside the Austin Creek reserve, north of town, and burned for most of seven weeks.

Embers are the concern for gutters. The UC ANR Fire Network calls debris in gutters “one of the greatest fire hazards for a building,” because an ember can light needles in the gutter and carry fire to the roof edge. The same page says covers may still need periodic attention and that routine clearing matters most. A guard reduces how much collects; it doesn’t end the need to look.

New homes have no choice in the matter. Chapter 7A of the California Building Code, in force for new buildings in State Responsibility Area hazard zones since 2008, says roof gutters need a means to keep leaves and debris from collecting. The chapter is written for new construction, so on an older house a guard is a choice. The state’s defensible space law still expects that roof and gutter kept clear of needles either way.

“The work crew paid attention to detail when cleaning our gutters, installing the gutter guards, and powerwashing the back of our home.”

FAQ

Guerneville gutter guards FAQ

A cover matched to them keeps most out of the gutter. Dave puts the purpose simply: the cover “keeps out the organic debris that clogs the system.” Redwood needles are short and slip through coarse screens, so we look at fine mesh styles first. Some needles will still rest on top of any guard, so plan on an occasional look after windy weeks.

They cut down on the dry needles and leaves that embers can light in a gutter, which UC ANR’s fire researchers single out as a major hazard. They don’t make a house fireproof, and they don’t replace the roof and gutter clearing that defensible space rules call for. Ask about material too, since UC ANR saw a plastic gutter melt when debris burned in it.

Yes, with the right style. Dave’s second test after debris is pitch: on a steep roof, rain can shoot past a cover that doesn’t match it. Tall walls, raised houses and hillside lots mean more ladder work, which we plan for at the estimate rather than on install day.

Yes. A guard laid over a gutter still packed with wet needles traps the problem underneath, so the runs get cleared, the downspouts flushed and the seams checked before covers go on. Jennifer H. described that kind of visit in her review: “We had gutters cleaned, repaired and covers installed.”
