Gutter repair
What kinds of gutter problems can be repaired?
Most of the common ones: leaking seams and corners, gutters that sag or pull away from the fascia, loose sections, dripping end caps, and downspouts that are crushed, disconnected or in the wrong place. Wanda D. wrote that Marcilino went over every gutter on the house, and “with a critical eye he examined all gutters for leaks and repaired them.”
- Leaking seams and corners
- Sagging or pulled-away gutters
- Re-fastening loose sections
- Downspout installation
- Downspouts relocated for drainage
- Disconnected or crushed downspouts
- Aluminum, steel and copper gutters
- Repairs before covers go on
Good to know
When does a gutter need a new or relocated downspout?
When the water it carries ends up somewhere it shouldn’t. A downspout that empties against the foundation, across a walkway, or into a planter that floods is worth moving, and a long run with only one outlet may need a second. Larry R. had “a couple of downspouts relocated for better drainage,” and Edward had new ones added.
Spotted a leak or a sagging gutter?
- Watch the gutter in the next rain and note exactly where it drips or overflows.
- Look under the drip for stained siding, soft fascia or soil washing away.
- Stay off the ladder if a gutter has pulled loose, since a hanging section can drop.
- Snap a picture of each problem spot to show us at the visit.
- Call (707) 940-7875 and describe what you’re seeing.
The rules
Does a gutter repair need a licensed contractor?
It depends on the size of the job. The Contractors State License Board says it’s illegal for an unlicensed person to do work that needs a building permit, uses employees, or is valued at 1,000 dollars or more in combined labor and materials. A repair that grows to several runs plus new downspouts can cross that line.
1,000 dollarscombined labor and materials, CSLB’s line for needing a license
NorCal Maintenance Inc holds California contractor license #772419, issued in 1999, in the C-61/D24 Metal Products classification, with workers’ compensation through State Compensation Insurance Fund and a contractor’s bond. You can confirm it on the CSLB license record and read the board’s own wording on illegal contractor activity.
What it costs
How much does a gutter repair cost?
A small fix, like resealing a leaking corner or re-fastening a loose run, costs far less than a long sagging stretch, several failed seams, or a downspout that has to be added or moved. The price comes from what’s actually wrong at your house, and when the repairs would add up to close to new gutters, Dave says so.
What moves the price
- How many seams, corners or end caps are leaking
- How many feet of gutter need re-hanging
- Downspouts added, moved or replaced
- Height and access around the house

From a customer
What have customers said after a gutter repair?
Cory T., who owns a rain gutter company, refers the repair and maintenance jobs that company doesn’t do to us, writing “I know David will take good care of them.” Edward had the crew clean his gutters and put in “some needed downspouts,” and Kristal M. was glad to get “before and after pictures.”
“Our gutters needed to be repaired and cleaned. These guys did a superb job! We even got before and after pictures.”
Silver includes minor seam repairs, tightened anchors and leveling adjustments along with two cleanings a year.
FAQ
Gutter Repair Questions
Why is my gutter sagging?
Usually because the fasteners have let go or the wood behind them has softened. A gutter full of wet leaves is heavy, and over a few winters that weight can pull it loose, especially where the fascia has dry rot. Loose runs get re-fastened to solid wood, and small fascia fixes fall under our dry rot repair.
Can you fix leaks at the corners of my gutters?
Yes. Corners and end caps are among the most common leak spots, because they’re joints that catch the flow from two directions or sit where water collects. Depending on its condition, the joint is cleaned and resealed or the piece is replaced, and the crew checks the neighboring seams while they’re there.
Do you repair gutters on tile roofs and two-story homes?
Yes, both. On clay or concrete tile, the gutter often sits under a curved overhang, which makes reaching a leaking seam slower and calls for care around the tiles. Two-story repairs are routine. If there’s a deck, skylight or steep bank under the problem spot, tell us when you call.
Is an old gutter worth repairing?
Sometimes. One or two leaky joints or a loose run can make a repair the sensible choice. If the gutter leaks in many places or has rusted through, Dave will tell you replacement makes more sense. Misti W. wrote that he “identified a few issues during my estimate process that I didn’t realize existed.”
Can a downspout be moved without replacing the gutter?
Usually. Relocating a downspout means adding an outlet where the water should drop and closing off the old one, so the gutter itself can often stay. It pairs easily with a cleaning or repair visit, and it’s a simple answer to a soggy side yard or a wall that gets splashed every storm.
Is it worth fixing one leak if the rest of the gutter looks fine?
Usually, yes. A single bad corner or end cap is a small job, and a leak left alone keeps soaking the fascia and the ground below it every storm. Have the crew look over the rest of the run at the same visit so you know whether more is coming.
