Gutter guards
How do you choose a gutter guard for my house?
By looking at what lands in your gutters first, then at the roof. Dave calls debris type the most important variable: redwoods, pine needles, eucalyptus, oaks and bay leaves are “extraordinarily acidic” and rot a gutter quickly. Roof pitch comes next, since on a steep roof the rain can come straight off past the wrong cover.
- Micro-mesh covers
- Expanded metal guards
- Screen covers
- Guards under clay and concrete tile
- Guards on metal roofs
- Covers for redwood and pine needles
- Covers on new or existing gutters
- Commercial and HOA properties
Good to know
Why carry 27 different types of gutter covers?
Because, in Dave’s words, “there isn’t one gutter cover that’s best for every application.” A fine mesh that stops redwood needles may be more than a house under a few oaks needs, and a cover that suits a low shingle roof can let water overshoot on a steep one. Brands we install include Gutterglove and Amerimax.
Before we look at gutter guards
- Note which trees hang over the roof: redwood, pine, oak, bay or eucalyptus.
- Peek at what’s in the gutters now. Needles, whole leaves and seed pods call for different covers.
- Jot down the roof material if you know it, whether shingle, tile or metal.
- Mention any leaks or sagging runs, since covers go on sound gutters.

The rules
What does CAL FIRE say about gutters and embers?
CAL FIRE’s home-hardening guidance tells homeowners to “use noncombustible gutter covers to keep out debris and reduce maintenance,” and to keep plant debris out of gutters to prevent ember ignition. In a wildfire, dry leaves sitting along the roof edge give embers something to catch. A cover that fits keeps that fuel out.
Noncombustiblethe kind of gutter cover CAL FIRE’s home-hardening guide calls for
Misti W. said it in her own words after her covers went on: “I’m relieved to finally have high-quality gutter covers that will protect my home from embers during wildfires.” The same CAL FIRE Hardening Your Home page also covers metal drip edges and hose access. A cover doesn’t replace upkeep in fire season, so plan a check-up and a rinse with your gutter cleaning.
What it costs
What do gutter guards cost?
It comes down to the cover, and Dave carries 27 types. A basic screen on a single-story house sits at the low end, and a fine micro-mesh on a steep two-story roof sits near the top. What your trees drop decides which one you need, so the free estimate starts with the trees over your roof.
What moves the price
- The cover itself: screen, expanded metal or micro-mesh
- What your trees drop, since pine and redwood needles need a finer mesh
- Roof pitch, roof type and height
- Gutters that need cleaning or repair before the covers go on
Dave matches the cover to your trees and roof at the free estimate, and the price is for the cover he recommends, not a one-size product.

From a customer
What do customers say after their gutter guards go on?
Elmer G. had rain gutters repaired and new covers installed, and wrote that the crew “explained each step of the process as the repairs were completed.” Kelly P. said the crew “paid attention to detail” while cleaning the gutters and installing the guards. Celeste G. added guards along with power washing and window cleaning.
“I'm relieved to finally have high-quality gutter covers that will protect my home from embers during wildfires, but at a much more reasonable price than major brand names.”
The Diamond plan includes gutter cover inspection and upkeep, so the covers keep doing their job.
FAQ
Gutter Guard Questions from Sonoma County
What kind of gutter guard works under redwoods?
Usually a finer mesh. Redwood and pine needles are thin enough to work their way into coarse screens and wide openings, where they pile up and hold water. Dave will show you covers suited to needle debris at the estimate and explain how each one sheds what your trees drop.
Will gutter guards work on a clay tile roof?
Yes, with a cover chosen for it. Clay and concrete tile curve out over the gutter edge, so the guard has to sit under that curve without lifting or cracking the tiles. The past work gallery shows guards we’ve fitted under tile edges, which is a good way to see what yours could look like.
Do gutter guards mean I never clean my gutters again?
No. A good cover keeps out the leaves and needles that clog a system, but fine grit, pollen and small bits can still collect on top or slip inside over time. Most covers need a periodic look and a rinse, which you can fold into an annual visit through our Peace of Mind Program.
Do steep roofs need a different guard?
Often they do. Dave points out that on a roof pitched too steep, rain can come straight off and shoot past a cover that isn’t matched to it. On steep sections the cover has to let water turn down into the gutter while still keeping debris out, so the pitch is checked before anything is recommended.
Can you add guards to the gutters I already have?
Yes, as long as the gutters are sound. Existing gutters get cleaned out first, and leaks, loose sections or sagging runs get fixed before the covers go on. Jennifer H. described her job that way: gutters “cleaned, repaired and covers installed.” If a gutter is too far gone, Dave will say so.
Do metal gutter covers cost more than plastic ones?
Generally, yes. Metal covers cost more than plastic or foam inserts. CAL FIRE’s home-hardening advice asks for noncombustible gutter covers, so if you’re getting the house ready for fire season, the cheapest plastic options are off the list from the start.
